Gears ?'s
Has anyone one on this site installed their own gears? I would like to upgrade to 456's. Is the install that difficult, is their any right up's on doing it and what is the best brand and place to buy them from? Guys around here wanting about 2500 to do the job and I think that is a little steep.

I did it on mine. It was pretty easy. Upside? money. It only cost me about $650 or so with fluids.
I have pics and could help you somewhat with any problems you have.
I wouldn't do it if that's your only mode of transportation though incase you run into trouble.
I'm trying to think what is the most difficult part about it. Probably setting the torque on the pinion is the hardest thing to do.
I had help from a buddy that works at ford but I'm sure you could do it with help from us on this site if you have the time.
PS I have a set of 456's for the rear of your truck if you have the 9.75 ring.
cheap.

Hey efuehrin... Nice pic!! Well... I dig both your trucks!!
But action pics ROCK!!!
I also have a gear ?... Have an 06 150 with stock 3.73 gears!
Lifting the truck etc... etc... Want to run 35x13.50x20's
? is will my stock 3.73's be ok to turn the 35's??
I mostly drive on the road. But I do tow a boat about 60 miles at a time.
Been stuck off road one to many times.
Probally cause I didn't have big enough gears in my last trucks... lol

oh yea and you will need to somehow be able to press off the old and on the new pinion bearings.
heres the pics I was talking about

I also had 3:73's in stock. it was a dog. I gained a couple of MPG's with the new gears. 4:56's would be perfect for ya. I only have 4:88's cause I may go up to 38's someday and this isn't my daily driver. and like I said I have some for sale cheap! check out my gallery.

You said you gained a couple MPG going to 4.56's with your 35's...
Forgive me but I thought bigger gearing ment lower MPG??
Or is it that bigger tires lowers the gear ratio =ing more pedal to get movin...
I'll hold off on those gears for now. I still need to find my lift.

Gears make your truck more efficient. When you lift it you kill the mpg's due to wind resistance. On top of that your truck will work harder to turn the tires.
Example:
Stock: 14mpg city, 18 mpg highway (this is what we are listed at by mfg.)
Lifted, with stock gears: maybe 10 mpg city, probably 20 mpg on highway if it is flat. If you hit hills, your highway mpg gets killed as your truck struggles to make it up hills.
Lifted with 4.88's: 14 mpg city, maybe 10 highway. My truck has no problem around town. The engine doesnt have to work that hard to move the tires at city speeds. My highway mpg has gone down because my rpms are higher.
Think of it like riding a bike.( you had the right idea) With big tires and stock gears, you are pedaling with the really tiny gears. Its really hard to move the bike and your legs start to hurt. When you swap to taller gears, its like pedalling with the big gears, really easy to get moving, but you have to pedal really fast to keep moving at high speeds (hence higher rpms on the highway)

It depends on the highway speed. I go 80, so my highway mpgs stink. I get just about stock city mpg with 4.88's, 35's, and lift
