Bilstein 5100 install...

Until I can get this lift put on.. I'm going ahead and installing the Bilstein 5100 adjustable shocks I just ordered to go on with the lift. How difficult is it to install? Will the shocks come with instructions? I'm assuming pull the spring... It won't require a alignment will it?

Thanks.

you need to take out you coilover and take it somewhere that can put the longer stut in the coilover, you need a spring compressor i would leave that to the pros. your going to need to get an alignment.

So basically what I need to have done is pull the shock and replace it? I'm not sure why you're saying take it in and get it done... It seems pretty simple. Am I missing something?

Can't I just rent a spring compressor and do it in my driveway pretty easily? Thanks for the help... I can take it in if I must, but I'd rather do it myself...

I guess I could just wait till I get the lift put on. Alignment included.

Compressing the spring is pretty easy as long as you have a spring compresser. I did it myself when I put my 5100's in and it wasn't bad at all and I learned a few things about my truck. If you feel like you can do it then go for it and save yourself about 100 bucks and buy some .

I'm in the military and we have an auto-hobby shop on base. They have a couple of different spring compressors there so I didn't have to rent one.

Well if I could get them installed for $20 bucks I'd do that for sure... Where did you get it done? I think autozone rents them out for 15 bucks...

Yeah, funny story we actually did have a coil that came loose once and that thing ripped right out. Luckly though me and my buddy were standing in the right place at the right time and didn't get hurt. After you use it once you get the hang of it and it's no problem but if it's your first time...it might pop your cherry

Called around and found a good price I think. $34 to install, $45 for the alignment. Not to shabby! Guess I'll leave it to the pros!

No, I didn't take the leveling kit out when I put in my Bilsteins (I want the max lift I can get right now and the 2.5 AS offers more). The ride is still different compared to when I had the stock shocks, mostly the floaty unresponsiveness is gone. I love these Bilsteins firm but not too firm, not bouncy or mushy at all, and very responsive. I really like them for day to day on road driving but when you get them off-road is when you'll love them.

I guess it would be OK to run the Bilstein and at the same time, leave some type of leveling kit in place AS LONG AS you do not adjust the shock any. Is this correct???

If you don't leave the new shocks adjustment feature in the stock (no lift) setting, now you're getting into extreme angles. Am I looking at this right??

Yes, the angles would be quite severe if you did that but fact of the matter is that you can't run lifted Bilsteins and a leveling kit because you won't even be able to put it back together since your control arm nut will not be able to connect with the threads. Leave the Bilsteins in the stock position/lift and you're set. Oh and it's more then just OK to run Bilsteins and a leveling kit it's fanfreakingtastic
