Ball Joint Replacement

Im putting my lift kit in my truck and when separating the ball joing from spindles I ripped up the boots on my ball joints. The guy at the parts store said you can replace em pretty easily. Any one replace there's that can give me a couple tips. The guy said you basically just hammer em out.

I beleive it's the upper ball joints that are a one piece assembly with the contol arm. They are sold as a ball joint upper a-arm assembly

They were selling them separately at the parts store. Both the upper and lowers were $40

Id use a press to install the ball joints. Using a hammer is alright if your careful but I dont recommend it.

^^^^I second that opinion^^^^

If you even slightly bend or mushroom them with a hammer you will prob have to cut them in the center to get them out (if you do at all).

I just did the upper & lower ball joints, quad shocks, & wheel bearings on mine today.................

I was an adventure I can live without doing again for a while

That is a good find...What auto parts store sells these separately?

The boots are cake to replace as they just need to be gently pried off with a blunt flat screw driver. The big problem you may encounter is product compatibility. The boots they sell you may be for their over the counter replacements. The way these snug up on the ball joint shoulders may differ from the factory parts. If they are loose fitting than you will be in trouble because the dirt/water/sand will get in there and destroy the joints very quickly.

In your case though it is worth a try because your joints are a definitely done for with puncture holes in their boots. If the replacement boots are slightly loose then I would clean/degrease the boot contact surfaces and apply a small amount of adhesive sealer to them. That should do the trick.

If the Ball joint isn't hurt I would just replace the dust boot. Done it before and no problems.
