OEM springs

I was talking to the Ford parts guy about getting a different set of springs for the front of my '04 F150 4x4 8200# GVWR long box w/ the 7 lug wheels.
I was thinking about installing a stock spring that was a little softer off of another model. He said he had know way of knowing what the different specs of the springs were other than looking on the door code and getting me the same spring that was on that particular truck.
Is this true? Seems like there would be a listing of specs of what springs were put on what model.

Anyone

I must always ask the hard questions.

Are there any parts guys out there that might know the answer to this?

I went that road looking for Tbars for an 01 ranger. They do not seem to have any way of knowing.I ended up finding a friend with a model ranger that had the springs I wanted and got the code from his truck then took that code to the dealer.
