"steering bump" on '06

Don't know if I'm in the right forum, but last week prior to getting a 2.5 level installed, I noticed while going over small holes on the road I'd get small shakes in the steering. Took my truck in today for alignmnet and the alignment tech(tire shop)noticed it too. He referred to as "steering bump".

I know I should have gotten this checked out a the dealer before installing the level ket. Do you think the dealership will warranty it? Is this something they would know wasn't affected by the leveling kit? Which it was doing it prior to the leveling kit, honestly.

Is this something that is common. The alignment guy said the only way he could fix it would be to take the level kit back off, then fix it and put the level kit back on. Seems like hes trying to bank some OTJ hours.

thanks for your replies.

Your steering wheel just twitches or moves a little bit when you hit a bump? That's completely normal. I've never heard of 'steering bump' -- but I know what 'bump steer' is -- possibly the same thing? Bump steer is like the wheel gets YANKED out of your hand when you hit a bump, it's a vicious process...

If you're talking about a little bit of almost free play when you have the wheel turned and you hit a bump, I dunno what that is, but my 07 does it too and mine's 100% stock.

Yeah your right. I meant "bump steer". Sorry. That's what it does, a little twitch of the steering wheel when I go over small pot holes and bumps.

Thanks for your response. Is this a more common thing as you suggest? Anyboby else want to chime in? Wonder if the alignment guy was just trying to squeeze my wallet.

Yeah it's going to move a little bit. You're moving the wheel up and down...and that is moving the steering knuckle up which is attached to the tie-rod, which shortens the angle when it goes up and causes it to 'bump' a little.

And yes, it's pretty common, especially in vehicles that have an altered suspension. That's why you commonly see steering dampers on the front of big, lifted trucks. (Those shock-looking things that mount sideways, in case you don't know what they are).
