Did I really need to do this?

Hey guys,
I recently replaced my upper and lower ball joints. The uppers were a breeze but I had a hell of a time doing the lowers. Once I seperated the knuckle from the joint, there wasn't enough slack to slide the knuckles over the ball joints.

The outer CV joint was hitting the top of the control arm with about 1 1/2" left of ball joint sticking threw the knuckle. I ended up cutting the ball joints to get them off. But in order to get the new ones on I had to unbolt the front axles and knock them out of the hubs in order to slide the knuckle over the joints.

So my guestion is, did I really need to do this? Has anybody had to do the same thing?
