shock removal

is there a simpler way to removing the shocks than holdong onto the part that spins so i can fit in my new ranchos. this is for my front end and the hanger for the coils is right behindit so there is no hand room.

I've always just locked a pair of Vise Grips on the Crome shaft. If your trashing the old shocks it's not a big deal.

When I installed my Ranchos I did the same to install the new shocks too. Just make sure to lock on the shaft near the bushing. Unless there are some major suspention failures the shock will never compress that far anyway.

My bad, sorry I forgot that, it's been sometime since I've been tinckering on my truck, it's been in storage collecting dust since June of last year. I'm hoping that in a few months when I get home I can get it running.

Anyway, I remember what I did now. I used a LARGE slip joint wrench and crushed the cylinder to keep it from spinning. If you aren't reusing the shocks thats not a big deal. Otherwise you need a thin pattern wrench to get between the mount and the top of the shock cylinder.

It's the same thing as a smoke wrench (Oxy/Fuel). Burn it off It is fastest way to change shocks. With the salt used around here, sometimes it is the only way to get shocks off.

I'm starting to think my mechanic takes all bad parts off with the fire-wrench. That's how I know, he knows what he's doing .

1997 f150 rear shock removal

Cut off the top nut with a reciprocating saw. I used a 9 inch bi-metal blade. Took me about two minutes.

I broke everyone of mine. Pipe Wrench 10 mm and cheater pipe on the front. Couldn't get a cheater pipe on the rears., was able to break them with just the wrench.
