Check the leaf springs, make sure the clamps are tight and the spacers are doing their job. Then spray some silicone spray inbetween the springs. And while your down there spary the shock mounts.

I had a very similar problem on my 98 which drove me crazy.
Turned out to be the tailgate creaking on the stops.
I was all ready to tear the rear axle off as I was convinced this was where the trouble was.
Try squirting some WD40 over the tailgate latches just to eliminate this first.

Good luck.

In addition to finding out what is causing this noise, I have noticed that when the weather is warm and dry I don't notice the noise as much, but when its cold or wet, or cold and wet, I notice the noise like crazy. Any further ideas? I know I need to take my truck to the dealer but I use my truck for work so its pretty hard to work out.

My 01 Screw had a "creak" coming from the rear passenger side of the cab.
It only occured when turning into a steep driveway making the truck "twist".
Two different dealers said it was coming from a metal seam in the passenger rear corner where the side and rear sheetmetal overlaps inside the cab. The first dealer greased it and the creak went away for about 6 months. The second dealer had the body shop weld it together. That fixed the problem for about 2 years. Now it makes the creaking noise again, this time preceded by a loud pop. I suspect there must be alot of flexing of the frame and cab on these trucks. Something they obviously tried to improve on the newer trucks. I hope this helps.

FINALLY!!!!...the noise its gone!!!...after posting a few threads and talking to MANY MANY Ford dealers, no one but me ever complained about this creaking noise....first, they torque'd the pickup up bed bolts, two were loose, but still had the noise....so, they went back to using the "chassis ears", checked the torque of the shock absorbers, leafspring hangers, trans. crossmember, and axle u-bolts...still a noise...put the ears back on, and found a loose bolt in the right rear cab mount......who in the F would have thought of that!!!...but i'm so glad cuz now my truck is QUIET!!!!...

Seems like the last place I would of checked but at least they found it. I've got a ball joint squeak right now that's driving me crazy so I know how you feel about squeaks.
