Rear end bounce

Hi Folks. Hope you all had a Happy Thanksgiving.

First I'll give you the symptoms I am having with my 98 F-150 4.2L Extended cab 2WD..... While driving normally on smooth pavement, I have a rear end bounce between 37 and 40 mph. With light braking, the rear of the truck bounces as is passes thru 20 mph.

For what I have done to try to eliminate this problem.... New tires all the way around, drive shaft balanced, tranny refreshed, new touque convertor, new high quality shocks all the way around.

I have even returned the truck to the tire dealer and he tried putting different wheels and tires on the back and even that didn't help the problem. I have determined that the problem is not rpm related by down shifting at a constant speed and the bounce does not change.

I do pull a race car and open trailer with a fairly heavy tongue weight (I do have a weight equalization system) for a short distance (15 mi) about 20 times a year.

Does this possibly sound like I have over stressed the rear springs? What symptoms would I get with bad springs?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Bob

From: ....I could be anywhere....
could be that the rear springs are shot or you need to add extra leafs to compensate for the extra weight from the trailer..
spring clamps may help you out also by tying all the leafs together

since you tried everything else

by the way check the tranny and motor mounts just for laffs...
driveline problems can come from anywhere

...zap!

I have the same problem and just thought I would bring this to the top to see if anyone might know something. Its extremely annoying.

Also, I thought you might have figured it out.

Mine is doing the same thing. I don't pull a trailer, well sometimes. I tried new tires, brakes & rotors. Didn't seem to help. Its aways around 40mph, more bounce when braking. Driving me crazy!! I guess I'll check the mounts, thanks.

I dont know at what rate it bounces but it just sounds like you need new shocks.

Our old farm truck (a 79 f150) didnt have any rear shocks and it bounced like that.

Just an idea. There is a low chance that your springs are worn out. Never heard of that.

The first thing I'd be watching is your suspension, that's easily the first thing that would be the cause.

Thanks, I guess I need to check the shocks next. I also just bought lowering shackles to bring the rear down a few inches. I've been told that this was the easiest way to level it. I hope this won't make the bounce worse!
