Idler arm

On my 2000 F150 4X4 The idler arm went out again, not broke just the ball joint. Is this a weak part on my truck and if so is there a better way to go than oem?
I got lazy and took my truck into dealer for 50000 mi. oil change and service, $335 later I had new brakes and the second Idler arm since new. I can live with brakes at 50000 but two idler arms is a bit much I think.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this.

Any idler arm is a weak link.

The most common cause of failure is lack of maintenance.
During most oil changes, people forget to grease these little guys. If you are having your oil change done by someone else, remind them to grease the chassis components.

Feel glad you have a Ford instead of a GM as those 1/2 tons from '88 until '98 whent through them in about 10-20,000 miles. Those trucks could replace them with a heavier 1 ton idler though and those never went bad in a 1/2 ton.

Kind of hard to blame it on maintenance when there may not be any grease fittings on the part(s).

the idler arm is one of the only grease fittings on the 97-2003 F-150, should be greased every other oil change if you ask me
