No Mudflaps w/2 inch lift- Legal?

I have a 97' F-150 with a 2-inch lift. I live in Vermont and I've been noticing other F-150s and trucks without any mudflaps on the back. My friend got pulled over for no mudflaps here. I realize that it probably depends local and state laws but does anyone have any suggestions as to why some trucks get away with it and others don't? My truck looks more rugged w/out them but with a 2-inch lift it's pretty noticable. Any help? Thanks.

Friend of mine got a ticket in Arizona for no mud flaps, from what I hear if you have a truck over a certain weight you gotta have'em, he has a F250 powerstroke.

Depends on your local laws.

Arizona has tough enforcement on this one, as mkinttrim notes.

California doesn't really enforce this one at all.

Flashy vehicle that attract attention also attract the Johnny Law's attention. Bump your stereo, have a super-loud exhaust, kill your front plate (in CA)... these are things that will increase your chances of getting pulled over in general.

Ian...VT law requires trucks to have rear wheel flaps.

Title 23 section 1306..."No person may operate or cause to be operated any bus, truck,.....upon any highway in this state unless the bus, truck....is equipped with suitable metal protectors or substantial flexible flaps behind the rearmost wheels to prevent as far as practicable, the wheels from throwing dirt, water,..."

As to why some trucks get away with it and other don't, can't really answer that one for you. It's not something I generally look for unless the truck is really lifted.

Thank you much. I was just confused as to whether or not there was a law about them in Vermont. Good to know. Thanks!

JHogan,

Just curious, in VT is there a difference between a "truck" and a "Pickup"? In Texas a F150/250/350 would not be considered a "Truck" for registration /title purposes, but a Dumptruck etc would be.

In Texas I believe duallies must have Mudflaps

There is no difference between truck/pickup. Truck is defined as "any motor vehicle designed primarily for the transportation of property...". Things like El Caminos are registered as trucks.

An F150/250 has the same registration fee as a pleasure car, $50 a year or $92 for two years, unless being used commercially. Most dealerships throw mudflaps in when you buy, of course they're dealership advertisements.

Again, it all depends on the state. In CA, El Caminos and such are registered as passenger cars.

I thought Vermont was, "Live Free Or Die"?

Oh wait, that's New Hampshire.

Vermont is, "Hey, where's your mudflaps buddy?".

CHP Truck inspector(the guys wearing coveralls and driving a pick-up with the camper shell) told me that the rear fender/flap must be below the centerline of the rear wheel.

I think Jordon not Mike had it right. It all depends!

This is something that goes from state to state as I don't see very many trucks with mud flaps on them even some with lifts on them either that TN doesn't enforce the law if there is one for tN

never heard of that law here in MN either- i'd say its 50/50 trucks with and without flaps. I have them on the rear on mine- it improves the looks a little IMO and keeps too much mud from building up on the muffler and the rear bumper- unless u really giver hell- then the whole truck is mud

Dan.
