When I first Bought my truck last march, I also thought that the power steering made a different noise than what I was used to. I thought it sounded like a small diesel engine. Had a few mechanics listen to it and both said it was a typical Ford power steering sound. the sound persisted for another few months. But now I hardly ever hear it. Oh... wait... maybe I'm just used to it by now

The PS pump in my Ranger started getting noisy at about 100K miles. I noticed the fluid level was down just a hair so I picked up some Valvoline Syntec PS fluid/ conditioner. Topped it off and within a couple days the noise went away. Been over 2 years and it's still working fine with no leaks.
