I am getting the WORST wheel hop...

I have the DJM 4/6 Drop kit and I am getting the worst wheel hop when I get on it. Sometimes the wheels will spin and other times it just violently hops around. i have read some posts about traction bars but was wondering if there was a cheaper fix and if not where can I get some inexpensive traction bars?

Thanks

Your not the only one

I have a 94 F-150 stock height. it has a straight six and a 5 speed manual tranny, i cant get the wheels to spin if i tried..i also stuck a limited slip in there..that doesnt help, in fact im almost sure it made things worse(for wheel hop)...but i have thought about adding traction bars as well. maybe ill just get stiffer springs...

How old are your shocks?

It sounds like your rear axle is trying to twist on you, causing the wheel hop!

I had this happen on a truck with a 4" suspension lift. It was so bad that I was replacing u-joints about every 2 months. I tried replacing rear shocks thinking that might have been it, but it didn't work. I had to add ladder bars to the rear axle to keep it from twisting.

I'm not sure what they do about lowered vehicles. Maybe a 3 or 4 link kit, possible traction bars. I'm not sure, this is my first 2wd truck.

I pulled off my drivers side rear wheel and my leaf spring is bent into an "S" shape! So not only am I goning to replace the rear springs but Im gonna put some lakewood traction bars on it.

I hope that works...

Ouch! that was some serious axle wrap to cause leaf springs to actually bend like that without just breaking them. Thats what a set of traction bars or a set of lateral bars will stop. Check out some of the drag racing or mud racing, or even truck pulling guys. Axle wrap causes a lot of problems for them.

yeah if I new how to post pictures I would post some pictures of it. The new spring is around $100 from ford and the traction bars are $125 shipped (I think next day) so I am going to try to do everything this weekend. I'll let you know how it all works out.

Thanks for the help

Age on my shocks?...HA

Yeah actually the poor truck was a work truck before i bought it so it got the crap beat out of it. so my guess is to say that the shocks are stock. but i have no lift at all..and man, its a pretty violent hop, havnt had springs in an "s" shape yet, that sounds bad, but when i eventually get a lift, ill get an all spring lift, and traction bars as well. but until then....

Trevy-
Try fixing what's bad before trying to modify and redesign your suspension. With new shocks you might start to think that maybe those engineers at Ford might have a clue about how to build a truck suspension.

i know what ya mean

Yeah i dont have plans to put a lift on until its fixed up..but what i meant was that if i do get a lift i would have it come with the shocks and all new leaf springs..instead of blocks...but before all that..im working up front with fords TTB dana 44 suspension..haha..yeah its seen its better days...

HOLY SH#T!

There were so many things that needed to be fixed on that truck...

My friend and I started at 10 AM and finished at 9PM

Pulled out the rear
Put new springs in
lakewood traction bars
changed the fluid
and welded some things up

First of all the shocks are absolutely destroyed. They are just covered in oil. We would have changed them but didnt have any on us. Plus I dont know which ones to get because Im assuming that they arent stock. They say "Explorer" on them

Changing the leaf springs was pretty easy

When we pulled out the rear before loosening the ubolts you could move the passenger side spring around very freely ( the other side would have to be hit with a mallet if you wanted it to budge). The piece that is welded to the rear was broken along the welds and completely pushed up. My friend had to bang it down weld it again and then weld and smooth a plate to go ontop of it so that it wouldn't happen again. Also from all of the moving around the ubolts actually made big grooves in the rear.

When we changed the fluid we found some metal which SUCKED! We spent a good hour or so with magnets and extra oil to flush all of the metal out. And yes I used 75/140 with friction modifier

The lakewoods were pretty easy as well but the idiots gave us the wrong thread nuts to go with the bolts that they gave us! And they didnt provide enough spacers so the snubbers are pressed up against the ends of the leafs. It makes for a pretty bouncey ride

Oh yeah and we had to CUT OFF the end of my gibson side exit exhaust. At that point I just wanted it to get done and it only hurt a little.

Oh and than we did a MAC intake, troyer pullies and e-fans (well actually just ripped the stock fan off for now. Its about 20F here so I can wait until next weekend to do the fans)

The truck feels Great! It handles soooooo much better and NO WHEEL HOP whatsoever! I let my friend KILL my rear tires for helping me out. And it pulls a little better. With the end of the exhaust cut off everyone tells me its much louder. I think it is too but I think its because its right under us now instead of venting off to the side.

Anyway thanks for all the help and if anyone has any questions about pulling the rear or anything I would be more than happy to help. Oh and e-mail me if you ever need something welded, this guy is amazing (tig, mig whatever)

Thanks again
