Lower a 4x4?

Lower a 4x4?

I know this may sound weird, but instead of raising my 4X4 I would like to lower it. The reason being that I have attained the lofty perch of senior citizen. Take my word, it's not worth the discounts you receive. LOL. So, I would like to bring the 2002 F-150 Supercrew that my wife and I love so much, a little lower to make entrance and egress a little easier. I know the 4X2 would be easier, but I need the 4X4 to get to my hunting camp, and for the winters here in Ohio. Can anyone give me any advice as to lowering kits, change in tire diameter or such? I have checked on some tire combos, but most of the tires in the 28-29 in. diameter (My present tires are 32 in. Goodyear RTS) are too narrow for my taste or do not carry the weight disignation needed for a 4X4. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Can't believe I am asking this since the first thing I did to my 78 F 150 was to put on a 4 in. lift and 35 in mudders. Ah well, life goes on. Thanks again for the help.

at first i thought i was going to pass out...lower a 4X4...but i guess it's okay with your circumstances... i have a 2wd so i wouldn't be much help but at least this post will push you back to the top...
oh and another whereabouts in the great buckeye state are you?

Hey, payableondeath6, I'm around the Medina co. area, little north of Akron. Long winters, short summers, one reason for the 4x4. Doesn't seem to be a lot of interest in this post here. Maybe I should take it to the AARP message board. LOL

How much do you want to lower your 02 screw? If your just talking about a couple of inches, you could remove the rear blocks (or locate them on top of the axle so you don't have to buy new u-bolt assemblies. that would get you about 2 inches lower in the rear. Pay attention to your drive shaft length--may have to get in shortened a bit.

The front can come down a little by loosening the torsion bars---you prbably don't want to go more than an inch, though since the ride will get a little "squishier". You'll need a front-end alignment

loosening the torsion bars

Woudn't that alter the supension? I would want the full ride just lower. Flipping the blocks on the rear should work but up front I'd think one would have to alter the spindles or something like that.

instead of lowering it I would opt for some real nice nerf bars or running boards. I have the Ford nerf bars on my 4x4 scab and it makes getting in and out real easy.

or you could just get a Subaru!! LOL

I have just the site for you www.4wheelonline.com they have a lowering kit for your 2002 F150 Supercrew 2" in the front and 4" in the rear for about $500. I haven't actually purchased this myself but have talked to them and seems that the only stipulation is that you CANNOT use the 4x4 in the LOW setting. Give them a call and let me know how it works out.

Lightbulb Lower a 4x4?

Hey Nute! I checked the site and it looks that is exactly what I am looking for. I will have to check with them to find out about tire clearance and driveshaft problems. I know sometimes you can have problems with hydrualic lines and such with these kits. But this gives me a boost (pun intended)! I sure hope it will work as I was about ready to give up and go for the 2WD. I thought there must be kits out there for this, but just didn't know where to look. Wouldn't you know a fellow buckeye would lend a hand. Great city too, with a Ford plant there. Thanks, and I will let you know how it goes if I decide to go that route. I want to also check on the low wide tires also. I have never had to use the 4W low anyway.

Bell Tech makes a 3/4 drop for your truck and Ground Force makes a 2/4 drop. They both consist of new torsion keys for the front and hangers/shackles for the rear. If you have the stock wheels and tires you shouldn't have to change a thing. Here are a couple of pics. Email me if you have any more questions or I can point you to some more photos.

I'm with hcmq, a pair of aluminum diamond plate side steps would be a good choice. We installed a set on my father's F350 dump so that my uncle could get in and out of it easier. Each step is only about 2 ft long and attaches directly to the frame. They are very sturdy, lower that the body mounted steps and look good. This way you keep the full functionally of your truck and make it look sharp too!

i definitely wouldn't put the rear blocks on top of the axle,they have bump stops on em and that would put em about 4 inches closer to the rubber bump stop,so if you hit a hard bump and had just about anything in the bed it'd bottom out.i'd go for the belltech kit if i were you,cause i lowered mine once,just cause i was bored.i let the front end all the way down and took the blocks out,and the u bolts will work without em,and i think it wore out my ball joints,i might've just noticed that they were worn out when i lifted it back up i don't know.but you would atleast have to have an allignment done by a good shop to make sure your camber and everything is correct.even small changes in ride height can make a big difference in all the linkage

Why lower a 4X?

Well first of all I'm old and my friends are older, we don't like climbing up into this big ol' truck. Secondly I don't ever use my truck over real rough terrain, just very loose gravel and sometimes sand. I'm not rock crawling just driving down bad roads.

lower 4x4

I am going too lower my supercrew 4x4 as well
talked to my alignment guy his suggestion was too
lower the frt torsion bars thinks 1.5'' will be max
remove 2" block from rear and de arc rear springs
told me to avoid drop shackles (maybe just his opinion)
causes too much sway.
