Body lift problems
Body lift problems
Just read a thread from Powerstroke 73 about problems he's had since he lifted his truck. Anybody else had any problems? I'm just about to do a 3" body lift and would like to hear of any problems that you've had.
Thanks.
Thanks.
Thanks, guys. That's reassuring. Wandell, I relly like your truck. I have an 01 White Supercrew Lariat with a Snugtop bed lid. Your truck has given me the inspiration to go ahead and do mine. May have to wait on the rims and tires. Just put Michelins on about a year ago and I really like them. They are the same as the originals were (285/70/17's ?) mounted on the original chrome 17's.
I don't know if mine was an isolated incident, but my truck has gone to crap to the point I can't really even drive it anymore. If you do the lift do yourself a favor and stay away from large tires, cause the stock steering (mainly the idler arm) can't handle them. Heck I just leave that truck parked in the shed now and I drive my old 91 Ranger again cause the F150 just keeps breaking.
fuel for the fire
OK, so I go to a local shop today and ask about a 3" body lift. He acts like I'm the dumbest person on Earth for even considering it. He won't even do one, even though he knows all about the PA kit, apparently the only kit for a Supercrew. According to him, it's dangerous (the airbag angle is different because of the movement of the front bumper, causing it to not go off when I want it to and go off when I don't - wouldn't that happen with a suspension lift too? I forgot to ask him), and you get squeaks and rattles that you can't get rid of. He does do the suspension lifts for about $2200. BTW, I forgot what the PA stands for (Performance ????) So... now what? I don't really plan on doing anything as far as tires and wheels. I'll probably just go with the stock ones.
I have a 6" supension lift with 285/65/16's with no idler arm problems.Just be sure to grease it often with a good EP type grease.

3" Body lift on for 5 1/2 years along with running oversize tires for that exact amount of time.
I have had 0 problems with my body lift. Granted at 78,000 miles Im getting ready to change ball joints, tie rod ends, and the idler arm, but thats a given with the larger tires. (My truck still drives fine)
As for Powerstroke, I feel for ya having problems, but you ran your truck pretty hard off road. EVERYONE I know that offroaded hard with their F150s (mainly fordtruckworld people) have had problems with their rigs due to hard offroading. They all faced very expensive repairs and most have now bought something new. MrScot, Big Pa S, Klaibs, Palletqueen, etc.... Those few names come to mind just because they're somewhat local. I personally never ran mind that hard off road because #1 I didnt have the money to pay for repairs, and I wanted to take care of my truck.
I personally dont think that these trucks should have problems due to offroading, but they do, kinda goes against "Built Ford Tough"

OK
Thanks, guys. I think I'll go ahead and have it done. I've been quoted about $750 out the door installed. That's in Arizona by both Desert Rat ($734) and a local shop in Flagstaff. Does that sound about right? Where could I get the PA kit if I decided to find a shop to just install it? PA is only about 100 miles from my home, but they don't sell retail. I guessing it's also a given that I want to get the covers to hike the spaces between the frame and body.
Yeah, I'm with SDIESEL316. I've seen some of Powerstroke's off road pics and he is hardcore. I'm sure that has something to do with it as well as the larger wheels and tires. I guess that's just part of it when you start going larger with wheels, tires, lift etc.
As far as the price you got for an install, that sounds high to me. You should try to find someone with body lift experience to help you install it yourself. Nothing like the sense of pride you get knowing you did it yourself. If you can't do that, you may want to get some prices frome local body shops. If they can strip a wrecked vehicle to it's bare frame and rebuild it, a body lift will be a piece of cake.

We'll just throw the agreements back and forth then. I agree with Wandell that quote is too hight. The body lift will run $100 or so dollars and I would NOT pay more than $300-350 for labor.
Good news. I found a guy today at a suspension/spring shop that will install the 3" PA body lift for $350. He can get the kit for $90 (which I thought was a smokin deal) and said for about $100 he would fabricate his own brackets for the bumper because he doesn't like the ones that come in the kit, although he said he'd use them if I wanted. Going to have it done after the New Year.
