Steering Stablizer
What exactly does a steering stabalizer do? I'm running 285/75/16 now and I saw single rancho steering stablizers were only 42 bucks, and I wasn't sure how much they'd improve or in effect what the actually do. Are they really for only off road use and my money would be better put towards sways bars or is it a worthwhile investment for a daily driving truck.

I installed a steering stabalizer on my 97 F150 and it made a great difference. I run 315's tires and the stabalizer prevents bumpsteer. At speeds over 35mph, when my truck hit small bumps in the road, my steering wheel would jump(pull) to the left or right. The stabalizer fixed this problem.
it basically works as a shock absorber for your steering. i highly reccomend the rancho, im extremely satisfied with it. good luck!

Would I feel a difference if I replaced the stock unit with the Rancho? It looks like a mod I could do myself and it wouldn't cost much.

I would like to put on a Rancho stabilizer when I put on new Rancho shocks shortly. Does Rancho make a stabilizer which will fit a stok, not lifted 97 4x4?? I have seen quite a few stabilizers made by other companies for the new Fords, but they are only for trucks with a suspension lift! Any info would be appreciated, thanks!
JimW,
my rancho steering stabilizer fits on perfectly and i dont have a suspension lift. i do have a body lift, but body lifts dont change the suspension at all, they just lift the body from the frame a couple of inches. So my guess is that yes rancho should make one for your truck. give them a call and find out, or ask someone that works at a local 4x4 shop to be sure. good luck!

Thanks for the info! I was pretty sure, but the guy at the local 4x4 shop did say there was no steering stabilizers that would fit under 97 without a suspension lift. Ha! I knew I knew more than him about my truck. Where exactly does it attach to under the frame? I think I know where, but would like confirmation.

I just ordered an Explorer Pro Comp steering stabilzer for $25.95 (EXP 220210) and the bracket for $18.95 (EXP 2580) from 4Wheel Parts. I'm hoping that my steering will be more positive after installation.

What's the price range for the Heckethorn?
Tanman and Jonc, did you guys install yourself? If so, how difficult was it?
Thanks.

Jonc,
I just read the post with your name in the topic. I see that you did install it yourself. I'd still like to know about how much, and where you bought from? Are you happy with it, or would you go with another brand?
Thanks again.

Yes, I'm happy with it... cost me about $50 delivered, give or take and I got it in 2 days. I called Rancho first and the person I spoke with couldn't tell me whether or not Rancho had an application to fit my truck and gave me his crappy attitude when I told him I had a Fabtech lift and not Rancho. Talked Rancho right out of a sale! Called the folks in the link above and got fast answers, good service and a good product!
