squeaks
My 97 4x4 has a terribly annoying squeak. It is coming from the left front of the truck. I've greased the 2 grease plugs & sprayed WD-40 on everything else (externally)that moves. Any ideas?? By the way... I've had the timing cover leak, Door ajar light staying on, & get <14mpg with 4.2, 5-speed & 3.08 gears. Still better than a Chevy!
My truck has a squeek up there also.I can't decide if its the brakes or something in the suspension.Mine gets alot worse on gravel roads.I really need to find the time to have the dealer look at.My friend has a 99 excab 4x4 and he has a squeek on the right side.HE is like me not time to go to the shop.

Hey guys,
take a look at the leaf springs. That could be the source of those annoying squeeks. I found the time to have my dealer look at mine today. My squeek was the left rear leaf spring. It is misaligned. So ford is replacing both of them(warranty work) at no cost to me.I think this is a semi-common problem on the f150s the mechanic asked me if I was sure it was the left front not the left rear that the squeek comes from.Stupid me said I am pretty sure.3 hours later -the front left is fine-and the new leaf springs are on order. If you guys are still under warranty take it in those springs might the the problem.Hope this helps.

WD-40 took care of the rear springs, however my noise is definitely left-front. With the truck parked, a slight movement causes awful noises. Its nothing that turning up the radio won't mask, but still sort of embarrassing when driving by the neighbors!
SPARKY,
Having same symptoms but on the rearI sprayed lithium greese in between leaf spring and noise is gone hope for ever, in the front the dealer replaced all the tie rod ends and pitman arm with only 1500 miles on new, my wifes Explorer had the same annoying squeek in the front, took it to the dealer and they replaced front suspension upper arm and lower arm, and if I am not mistaking this is the culprit of your problem, after this replacement the noise went away, remember the joint's don't have a greese fitting.

I have the pretty prominent clunking coming from the left front, I just installed 2" coils with new upper arms and ball joints. The truck has 60k. Could it be the lower ball joints? Or just the new coil refusing to sit still?
Heard these ball joint for my year are very hit and miss (high failure rate)???

My 99 has the same trouble. I read in a previous post that it can be a squeaky torsion bar bushing. I am taking mine to the dealer to fix that as well the dreaded 5.4L passenger side head leak. BTW, also going to discuss piston slap with the service manager. Wish me luck...I will undoubtedly need it!
Mine's lifted 2" front and back.

I'll just bet those lower ball joints are dust. Maybe not. Who can tell? How do you go about nailing down this stuff?
Prolly just replace them for the heck of it when I go in to swap out the 2" coils for 3" coils(lift). Or maybe when I need tires.

Since you say it is coming from the left front, check the top bushing on the shock absorber. If it is worn, crushed or damaged in any way it may be causing the top mounting screw to rub against metal.
For me it was one of the worst squeaks since it took quite a while to detect it. And was a very hard and annoying one. Now, the other side is starting to do it but I am ready to order new shocks so I am not fixing or replacing any bushing for now.
