Question Hellwig question

A couple of questions for someone who has personally installed #7621 rear sway bar on a 2K 9.75". I saw the "How to pictures", but I could not see this part. Please describe the side frame bracket installation. Please describe areas of installation clearance troubles (ex. ABS wiring, emergency brake line). I saw/understand the brake line change.

Has anyone installed the front #7646 matching unit? Any tips?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Question

ANYONE!!! I don't want to put it on upside down unless the instructions say so. Does it have clearance problems with the ABS/diff wiring? Did you relocate the emergency brake cable on this application? What does the side mount/frame bracket look like and does it interfere with the drivers side frame tubing? I've seen many signatures with this bar on this exact application.

As for ABS wiring, emergency brake line, there is no clearance problems. What I did with the parking brake bracket is bend it a little so the brake cable and swaybar don't rub against each other. The long bolts for the sway bar are for 4wd and shorter bolts are for 2wd applications. The driver side mounting bracket is not as difficult as you think it is, just take your time. You'll see the difference when you've fininshed installing the swaybar. Haven't heard of the front unit yet, but changing bushings should be sufficient. Another tip, I suggest you get galvanized washers, stainless washers or spray undercoating on the washers provided because they rust.

Cool

Y2K Hawaiian Lariat- Thanks for answering my post. So, is it true that the bar has plenty of clearance (mounted above the axle/driveshaft) from the ABS wiring & the extended metal ABS area of the diff? I looked at the area to mount the frame brackets, but what I need to know is: What did you do to rearrange the tubing on the drivers side frame bracket? What does the frame bracket look like/how does it mount? That's a great tip about the washers. Did you have any other problems? What improvements have you had? The front bar is substantially larger at 1-7/16"; Supposedly a matching set of front & rear. I found a good deal on them that expires this month and wanted to analyze the practicality before I bought them. Thanx.

dragonboy- Thanks for the pictures. Does that bar go completely above the extended metal ABS area of the diff? Did you re-route any drivers side frame tubing? Did you drill any side mount frame holes on either side?

Max,The bar goes completely above the extended metal ABS area of the diff? There's about 3/4" of clearance between those two components. No re-routing is necessary for the the components near the bracket. And there's factory holes in the frame that you mount the sway bar bracket to.

Question

Max Mitchell,
How did the install go? Where did you get the good deal on the rear sway bar?

Cool

I searched around and found a sale at J.C.Whitney; $110 rear, $120 front. The front got back-ordered until this week. The install was not too bad. The axle brackets need to be rotated up to the 2 o'clock position (if looking at the passenger's rear wheel), so that the bar clears the diff/ABS casting and wiring. A little measuring to center, bending the brake lines, and bending the emergency brake cable bracket slightly. It has plenty of clearance everywhere and has a noticeable change in handling. It also cut down on tire spin around corners. I can't wait to get the front one; this is the one for handling (1&7/16", OEM=1&1/8"). If you have any questions give me a shout. I got another catalog last week that has them on sale again until Oct. 31,2000.

max mitchell,
Thanks for the speedy reply!
What JCWhitney Part # did you use? I checked their web page and it looks like they are selling them for $134.95. The catalog you have advertising them for $110 sounds like a great deal!
You can email me at joegoodrich@bigfoot.com if you want.
Thanks...

I called them and they told me that other members could get the discount also; by mentioning "catalog #118J-07" before 10/31/00. There will be about $20 shipping, and the front one comes directly from Hellwig. Also, they come with a different application specific #, and Hellwig has different application specific #s too.
