Suspension squeaks

Me and my buddy went trail riding today in my truck and I noticed that the suspension squeaks real bad in the rear. Guess it's from washing my undercarriage to much, but I have no idea. If anybody has the same problem or knows what to do please respond. Thanks, I appreciate it.

I had the same problem in my '97 ext cab after getting my rear leaf springs replaced under factory warranty. If the dealer(or assy line if your springs weren't recalled) didn't center the springs correctly, the front spring eyes may contact the forward mounts under suspension articulation, causing that annoying squeaking sound. Look at the forward mounts-if the springs are not exactly in the center of the hangers, get the dealer to line 'em up correctly. After a couple of trips to the dealer (they swore they never heard it driving over their speed bumps) I had to take the service manager on a ride down a nearby trail to show him the problem and get it fixed right.

Don't know if I can lend any help on the rear spring squeek, but I have a squeek in my front end. Truck has 150 miles on it and I'm getting a loud squeek/bump noise coming from both front driveshafts. Do the front driveshafts have slip yokes in them? Sounds like the noise is coming from the u-joint (or CV joint) between the shaft and the wheel.

Bekelusa,

I don't drive a 4by, but doesn't Ford have an electronic pushbutton selector for the front drive system on the XLT? It is just a theory, but I suspect that your vehicle may be stuck in Four Hi. (i.e, the button is off but the solenoid is stuck.) I would definitely suspect this if the noise increases in corners. Anyway, with such low mileage(and such an expensive new toy!), I would definitely be heading for the dealer ASAP.

The truck has manual 4X4 shift - not the electronic shift. Do the front driveshafts have any kind of grease fittings?

Went to the dealer and he suggested that I have a "sticking" ball joint. Upon closer examination, I have pinpointed the noise to the lower shock bolt on the passenger side. Perhaps just a problem with the shock. Dealer is going to dig into it Friday...

Crawled under neath and realized that sure enough, both bottom shock bolts are loose. Took about 1/2 turn on the bolt and stopped the noise.

Same problem from the rear of my 98 extended cab. I am going to get under it and look at the leaf springs.

I'm getting a creaking noise whenever I apply the brakes. when I slow down to stop the suspension creaks, and it's driving me crazy!(short drive). I looked underneath and everything looks fine. I lubed the springs and the shakles but this hasn't helped. Anyone have any ideas?

Hi all, I just read Henry's posting of his squeking suspension. I to am also suffering from the same "squeking", I'm just curious as to what ultimately resolved this squeking, & what exactly is it? I squek whenever I accelerate (normally) or start to break. I have a appt w/the dealership this Fri. & would just like some insight as to what the problem/s is/are, & what fixed the problem. Thanks all

I have a squeak coming from the rear end of my 4x4. I determined that it was the tailgate. You may want to eliminate that possibility by driving with the tailgate down, if you have one.

Just to add to the discussion. I too have suffered from squeeks. Took 3 try's at the dealer to get an answer other than "could not duplicate"

On the last trip, I drove into the Service bay, found a service writer, handed him the keys, and said fix the squeek or keep the truck.

They found out what was wrong. To my surprise three of four shock bolts were loose. The tech re-torqued all of the shocks, and showed me how loose they were.

I hope this will not be a repetitive problem..will keep you guys informed.

If you hear it on your truck, it sounds like a rubber on metal squeek, and it happens at any speed.

gwt. I tried leaving the tailgate down but it didn't work. it was worth a try.

Ender11. I'll check those shock bolts, maybe I'll get lucky.

Thanks, Henry
