Question about spring compressors
I posted this in engines, Mistakely. I have a '94 5.8 L, that i wish to remove the coil springs from. I got to thinking; Instead of wasting the 140-150 bucks on compressors that i'll use once in a blue moon, could i maybe make Like Hooks? Like maybe a foot long bar with like 3" Hooks on either side, and a 6" body? would that work? My grandpa was an auto mechanic, and my Dad was too (hes a millwright now) And my Dad said it would work if I measured the springs, and calcualted the distance to make the hooks. He also said that to be safe, the hooks had to be bent in really far, just enough so that the springs would fit inside the hooks. Maybe i could jack up the suspension, therefore compressing the springs, and put one of those hooks on either side of the spring? Would this work Thanks!
Well I suppose that would be a good idea, if you're not worried about bodily harm. Bottom line you're gonna be putting ALOT of stress on them and unless you know what you're doing fabricating there's a very good chance it'll fail. Many parts stores will let you RENT these specialty tools. AutoZone I know has a system where you leave a deposit (about the value of the tool) and you take it home and use it and when you bring it back they give you your deposit back (free rental). I'm not really sure WHY you even need one anyhow. You don't really need a spring compressor to swap out the springs on a TTB or a 2wd for that matter either. You should be able to drop them out without one.
