MOBIL 1 OW-20
This should stop the debate!!!!

Just returned from SEMA and I spoke with a Mobil Rep.
Mobil will be comming out with a 0w-20 oil The Rep told me this was designed for vehicles that require 5w-20. I have the data sheet and will scan in and post on monday

Did they give you any indication on when it would be available or on the shelves? I'll need it by the end of the month.

Might as well pour water in engine. There is nothing wrong with using Mobil 1 5w-30. That is thin enough for me.

To Galaxy,

No they did not give a definate time frame. The rep said it would be availible in the 1st quater of next year. I did not scan in the data sheet because that information is availible on the exxonmobil web site and has been posted in the engine forum

Question

I have some questions for the viscosity-savvy members here...

1. Why would I want to put 0W-30 in my truck's engine. Or for that matter, ANY engine. ZERO Viscosity?

2. How does one attain zero viscosity in an oil? Isn't that the viscosity of water?

3. What is wrong with Mobil1 5W-30? That is the only oil I used in my '99 for 3 years, and what I intend to use in my '01 (unless I get some good reasons to use the 0W-30 as a result of these questions

Thanks All.

Well, the answer is somewhat complicated. The guys at Performance Technology have an explanation:

Just a question here. I am thinking about switching to a synthetic oil or one of the blends. The reason for me wanting to switch is so I will not need to change my oil as often.

Based of the limited amount of reading I have done on this board it does not seem like anyone using the synthetic oils are reaping that benefit.

Is there anyone out there that is changing their oil less frequently with the higher price synthetic oil.

Yes F150NKY, I agree with you that less frequent oil changes are a benefit of synthetic oils. That, in addition to superior engine lubrication, also helps make the extra cost worthwhile. I am currently running Mobil-1 in my Grand Marquis and changing that oil every 5,000 miles and I am running Amsoil in my Supercrew and changing it every 7,500 miles. I used to change oils every 3,000 miles some years ago when I used conventional oils.

I do think it is a good idea to choose a premium oil filter designed for those extrended drain intervals. Check the manufacturers info on the box. Most of the el-cheap-o filters at Wal-mart, etc, come with recommendations to be replaced at 3,000 miles. I think it's worthwhile to shell out a few extra bucks for a filter that's rated to be good for 7,500+ miles.

What type or brand of oil filter would you recommend? K&N or some other brand.

Thanks,

Jim
