Question Biggest Tires - No Lift, "17" Rims

Hi guys,

This is my first post! I just got an '01 SCrew 4x4 and "Baby needs a new set of shoes!" I don't want to replace the stock 17" rims, and I don't want to lift the truck, but I want to get the biggest tires (probably A/T KOs) I can.

How big can I go without requiring a torsion twist or cutting under the wheel wells?

Thanks!

Oh yeah, I have the 5.4 with 3.75 gearing.

I just put on the 285/70/17s but have my torsin bar lifted up almost 2 inches. You may want to move it up a little but I would say that the 285s would fit just fine. Anything bigger and you would need to get diffrent rims as I belive the Ford 17" rims are 7.5 inches wide.

I will have pics of my truck with the new tires hopefully by Sunday.

Oh and I also assume you have the 265/70/17s right now? Correct?

You can go up to 33's on the stock rims without having to crank the torsion bars. I have the 33's and have had absolutely no problems with rubbing in rough terrain. I decided to crank my bars only because I like the look better.

Hi MisterE
You may stick with standard size 17" inch tires . I have the same setup . I put on the BFG A/T KOs 265/70R-17 they "look" bigger and handle great in mud and sand . I believe your rearend gears are 3.55:1 instead of 3.75:1 . Go with what you want but I like mine just fine.

I didn't catch that but with the 2001 there was no option for any other gears besides the 3.55s.

You can stay with the 265/70/17s and you will have a lot more choices in what brand/type of tire you can get. If you go any higher your choices become very limited because there isn't a lot of demand for the 17" tire sizes....yet....

I just bought an '01 Screw last week. Sounds just like yours. I put 285/ 70 /17 BFG AT's on it a couple days later. The truck is bone stock, no torsion cranking...yet, and the tires fit just fine. But I am going to crank the torsion bars tomorrow because I like the look.

Thanks!

Thanks everybody.

I currently have 265 70R 17 Goodyears that are about used up at 39k. I can't figure out which of these numbers refers to actual wheel diameter, which I am specifically interested in. How do I determine that from the tire numbers?

Are the A/T KOs available in 285 70R 17? What will they likely go for?

The salesman said "3:75" when I asked him what my gearing was. Where would I find this number on the vehicle?

There were NO 2001 or 2002 SuperCrews with 3.75 gears. As a matter of fact Ford has never made a 3.75 for SuperCrews. The 3.73 gear ratio only became an option on the 2003 year model. Prior to this year it was 3.55! Your salesman is wrong if he told you otherwise.

There should be a metal tag on your truck's rear end (attached by a cover bolt) that will give you the gear ratio. As has been said it is most likely a 3.55, 3.73's were an option in 02. BFG A/T KO's are available in a 285 X 70 X 17. It's a fairly new tire but if you look they are out there.

Inside the driver's door jamb ther is a manufacturer's label. At the bottom, look for "AXLE". If it indicates "H9" you have a 3.55 LS, if it indicates "B6" you have a 3.73 LS.

I don't know if the 3.73 was offered in '01, but others here have said not.

I have the 285/70/17 BFG A/T on my truck. They fit just fine with no torsion bar cranking......but I cranked the front end up 2 inches today just because I like the leveled out look better than the factory rake.

I called around before I actually bought the truck and got prices on these tires ranging from $775 to $940 mounted and balanced. Got them for $700 by letting my salesman I bought the truck from get them for me at his price. They are hard to come by though. The tire guy said that they were the only 4 tires available to dealers in the Southeast at the time I bought them.

To answer your ? about wheel diameter.....in the tire size you have....265/70/17....the "17" is the wheel diameter. "265" is the tread width (265mm). The "70" is the profile aspect, or section height [70% of the width (265)]. This means that the sidewall, from rim to tread is .70x265mm which equals 185.5 mm

Here is link to a site I like to use when wondering about tire size. It converts metric sizes to inches.

http://www.therangerstation.com/Metr...nch_Tires.html

Here is a link to a manufacturers label decoder.

Hope all this babbling helps you.

Talking

I too just put the BFG AT/KO 285 70R 17 tires on my '01 4X4 Screw. I really love the look and the performance so far! I did not have to crank the torsion bars or do any other mods to make em' fit. Good luck!

I can tell you that 295/75/16's on a 8" rim will rub in the front with the bars cranked 1" but I like the look, so it was worth it. You have to grind some plastic for clearance Here's a chart you can use,http://www.dakota-truck.net/TIRECALC/tirecalc.html and look at the differance in the gear ratio. If you are going to keep the stock rims the KO's would be a good choice. Check out 1010tires for a price, you may have to call as I don't see the 285/70/17 listed http://www.1010tires.com/tire.asp?ti...in+T%2FA%AE+KO

My opinion go with the 285/75/R17. I have 285/75/R16 and they don't rub at all. I did what all the other guys did and tighten up those torsion bars just to b/c I like the level look as well. I can tell you this, with the factory mags you won't be able to get the 33's, b/c they are wider than 285 and 295's, at least this is what the guys at Discount Tire told me. Either way, Good Luck.
