Question Transmission problems

Now so far (knock on wood) I have had no tranny issues other than the occasional sliping "pop" sound.

My question is for those of you out there that are tranny experts, what shifting action do you think wears the transmissions out the fastest or causes the most problems?

For example shifting from 2nd to 1st quickly...jumping on it in a certin gear...downshifting...upshifting...stop and go traffic...etc??????

dcovell, this is going to be fun...

1. Drive to Reverse at 15 mph
2. Drive to park at 65 mph
3. Park to Drive at 5,000 RPMs
4. Reverse at 45 mph, turn the wheel sharp in one direction and pushing accelerator to the floor and jam it into drive. Cops do it all the time...no problemo duuuude.

Mr Covell, that should just about take care of your tranny, no worries if your truck passes that test

I think the 4R70W is a great transmission. It's just not a heavy-duty truck transmission.

If you have a full-size, 4x4 with a 5.4L engine, then the 4R70W is going to be the weakest point. A 4R100 would be much better suited for transfering all of that torque and moving so much weight.

Aj,

When you gettin' that CEO position at Ford or maybe head of design or drivetrain engineering? If so, then maybe we'd get that much deserved 4R100 in all F150s equipped with a 5.4L and a 4x4 drivetrain as you mentioned. I couldn't agree with you more.

dcovell,

I hope I didn't **** you off, I was just kidding and thought you'd have fun with it too. Sorry if you didn't find it funny, it was just a joke.

Well the only test I didn't make was the drive to park at 65MPH. Still have the parking pin rolling around in there.

Now common sense tells me that all those things are not a good idea, I understand that the cops may do some of that stuff but there cars are lighter and they can afford (not there cars) to mess them up.

Now will the automatic clutch even enage if you go from drive to reverse at a high rate of speed, it would seem like it wouldn't, but im not gona try it.

Now seriously I have done the burn out where I put it in neutral, bring it up to about 3500 RPMs and drop it in drive while flooring it. It lights up those tires and puts on a nice show!!! I've done that about 3 times now and so far no repercusions from that.

Actually, would 65mph to park really be all that bad if you have all four locked up?

Two words "anti-lock brakes"

So good luck getting those tires to lock up and then park it while skiding along. Also why in the hell would you want to do that?
