SCrew Gas Mileage
Haven't had my S'Crew long, but took a trip to Denver from St. Louis and got about 18.4 mpg, average around town is 14.5. I've got a little over 5600 miles on her now

I have a 2002 Screw with 5.4L, 3.55 rear and 17" wheels. I, like some other semi-weird folks here, have watched every drop of gas I use. At 6235 miles to date I have used 369 gallons. This equates to a total average of 16.9 MPG. Most all of this is highway speeds of 62-75 MPH. This total includes on trip round trip from south of Atlanta to Myrtle Beach, SC towing a 5500 lbs travel trailer. Worst mileage was during this tow, at 11.2 MPG. Best tank of gas lasted 513 miles. (25 gal tank = 20.something MPG).
In the oh, by the way department, at 60 miles per hour I actually get worse mileage than at 70. I think I can reason this out this way:
At 60, my RPM is 1375. At 70, it is almost 2000.
At 2000 RPM the engine is barely "working" and the fuel injectors are delivering a very small amount of fuel to provide this work.
At 1375 RPM though my foot has to stay in the pedal a little harder just to keep rolling at the same speed. Pushing the pedal down 3/4" to 1" is normal for small hills. Even though the computer is designed to take all these different parameters into account, I believe that more fuel is dumped through the injectors at the lower RPM because of the lack of torque at 1375. I am not suggesting that the engine lacks torque, I have more than what I need for everyday driving, and then some.
Think about this: If you were to drive a manual transmission powered truck at 60 MPH and without downshifting, floor it and see how it reacts climbing to 70. It will use dramatically more fuel than if you downshift one gear. You will not have to depress the pedal nearly as far to achieve the same result, and do it more efficiently.

I filled up this past Saturday and my mpg was 9.21. That's about the worst it's ever been. I only drove 95 miles in 16 days so that pretty much explains the poor mpgs I get.

4.6L Supercrew Gas Mileage
I have a 2002 Supercrew (4X2) with a 4.6L Windsor V-8, a 3.55LS back end, standard tires, and a K&N filter. In 11 months, I have recorded 37,600 miles!
Over that distance, I have averaged between 17.5 and 18.5 miles per gallon, mostly over a country highway road. That's going between 45 and 65 mph. I have noticed, though, on the interstate (70 mph) the mileage is at 19 mpg or so.
For the weight and size of this truck, I think this is pretty decent gas mileage.

Man, I don't know how everyone computes their mileage but the best I've ever recorded was a trip down to Florida from SC, I got 16.5 mpg. Now, I recently took a trip, 500 miles and I only got 14.5 mpg at best. Now, either I'm doing something wrong or some others are no calculating the mpg like I am.
This is how I determine my mpg. I fill up my tank, zero out the trip odometer and drive. Once the tank is empty, I fill it back up, record the mileage on the trip odometer and divide that mileage by the amount of gallons of gas I just pumped.
If there are others computing their mileage different, lets hear your method. Either something is wrong with my truck or mileage is being computed differently than the way I do it because I just don't see how a 5K lb truck can vary so much in the mpg. I've seen anywhere from 9 mpg to 20 recorded on this thread...
I'm at a loss as to how folks squeeze so much more mileage out of their trucks than I do, help me out with some explanations.

I almost don't care anymore but with my mods and even my larger tires I normally get around 15-16MPG.
After putting on the larger tires my shift points are off so the engin stays down in the lower RPMs too much and because I have to give it more gas to drop a gear I think it is hurting my gas mileage. Will be getting my chip reburned soon.

Remember, if you go to larger tires, your speedo & odometer are off (reading both slower and shorter distance that in actuality).
Your mileage might not have suffered as much as you think.

I've got the FX4 package and everytime the local police put out one of their radar trailers that show your speed, my speedometer is always off by 2-3 MPH (reading 37-38 to the radar's 35). Similiar results at highway speeds.
My MPG computes at 13-14 city and 16+ highway. Who knows what it really is.

Drove highway and got 22 MPG; 178 miles with the wind. Return trip was 15.8 MPG. Still not bad for a 2001 F-150 SuperCrew 5.4L 4x4!
By the way, I set the cruise control to 75 MPH almost the whole way.

Bruce,
Was your trip out down hill too
Also, I've noticed you have the ARE lid, I guess that's worth one to two mpg, hey?
On your TG shiftkit, did you do it yourself or have it done? Which shift kit was installed, the reprogramming version with valves or just the shift kit improver that's in a small green box? I'd like to discuss your satisfaction with your tranny kit, mine is the reprogramming kit and it shifts too hard in my opinion.
familyman,
Most of my driving is around town too, I only work three minutes from home. However, the best mpg I've ever recorded is 16.5 so I don't think it's going to get better, unless I'm going down hill with a tail wind.
