What are the body panels made out of

I've only had my 02 supercrew for about 2 weeks. I noticed while going over the body that the box section does not sound like metal. I then looked at the edges around the cab and also around the gas cap and again it apeared to be some type of synthetic material. Doesn't really matter to me Im all for progress just kind of curious if any one knows what they body paneling is made of.

I'm pretty sure the box panels are a fiberglass composite layup and I know the hood is aluminum.

The exterior panels of the box are glass reinforced plastic resin. Look inside the gas filler hole area and you can see it for yourself. The rest of the truck's body is either steel or aluminum (hood only). Not sure what the gate is. Steel?

body panels

I was unaware of that when I purchased the truck but I am pleasantly surprised. I think it is great that Ford is using this technology it is a much better alternative to thinner metal paneling. I think it is much more durable. Thanks for the info.

Durability may still be a question! I saw an Explorer Sport Trac at my local Ford Dealer Body Shop last week, the whole right side (off the Bed) was missing. Dude was transporting a short block (without restraining it) and it slide into/out of the fiberglass bed panel. What a mess!!!!!!

The sport trac has both box (bed) interior and outer fenders made of fiberglass reinforced plastic....the supercrew as a steel interior bed and only the outer fenders are plastic. for more info see this thread.
