Actually I belive the reason for the fiberglass composite on the sides is so kids cant decorate the side of your SCREW with refrigerator magnets...
But seriously I belive it is a production cost thing. The SCREW is the only truck with that side, it is diffrent from the flare side and unlike any other truck model Ford makes. So stamping them out of metal may have been too high of a cost.
Also you will notice that the hood is made out of aluminum. Now this may be a weight saving thing but am not sure. The fiberglass may be a weight thing too. But I belive the manfacturing cost is the main reason.
As far as damage goes, you won't be able to dent it but with a bit more work i'm sure you can crack it, etc.

dcovell and canyonslicker: Thanks for the info guys, I appreciate it. I haven't heard any complaints about the rear bed panels being easy to crack (I haven't really heard much of anything about them, come to think of it), so I guess we are all good to go unless we get hit pretty hard.
DAVEMAN: Thanks for the link. Searches, in my experience, have been hit or miss on these boards. But this is an -interactive- forum, so I figured questions (however redundant) were still allowed... Call me lazy if it makes you feel better, but don't get your panties in a bunch
canyonslicker: Yes, DD-976 (as used in my alias) is the hull number of the Spruance class destroyer USS MERRILL. Sadly, she was one of the first Spru-cans to be decommissioned. A little insight: I only spent a short time aboard her during my training years, but she left a big impression on me and was one of the reasons I decided to stay Navy. Great ship, great crew, that's why I picked the alias. I digress...
