Hey Racerex, welcolme. I actually get a little worse than you do but I've got big a$$ tires that don't help none. I think my best yet is 14 but that's a guess because my speedo's off due to the tires, thus, my odometer is off as well. I'm hoping to get electric fans for Christmas to see if I can pick up any more. No, I don't have a chip, just what's listed below. Nice to have another Mustang guy in here too, go take a look at mine and let me know what you thing...

Galaxy, nice Mustang. I am the original owner of mine as well. I converted it to an open track car this past winter. I raced at Gingerman, Hallett and Topeka this year. Wife quit her job this month to homeschool the kids so I put it up on blocks for now.

I kept pretty good track of the mileage on my 01 XLT 4X4 SCrew (17" wheels) for the two years I owned it. City Driving averaged 12 to 13 MPG and Highway was 16 to 17 mpg. The best I ever got was on a 3500 mile trip (mostly highway) at 19.8 MPG.
Of course I am sure you know it is all relative to how you drive and the traffic conditions you drive in. The 5.4L probably averages a little less than the 4.6L. In city driving if you are constantly stopping and starting w/quick starts from start vs less stopping and smoother acclerations your mileage will be lower. Constant speeds over 60 and full bore accelerations onto the highway will obviously net poorer mileage. In either case the more you get into the acclerator the poorer the mileage.
I haven't had my 03 SCrew long enough to really map out the mileage yet; but it seems about the same.

Racerx,
This a 2001 SuperCrew with a 5.4, automatic and 3.55 rear end. I put the JBA Evol exhaust, SuperChip and AirForce 1 all on at the same time. That was the biggest jump in mileage. Most of my miles are highway but it was amazing. It went from 14.6 to a high of 18.4 averaging in the high 17's. Later I stuck a Transgo shift kit and an Underdrive pulley set on it. Last was a Derale dual electric fan set up, this was a noticible H.P. improvement and the mileage seems to be even higher. I recorded an all time high of 19.5 m.p.g. last fill up. I don't race it but don't drive like my grandpa either. By the way this is a 4X4. I'm going to upgrade the fuel system in the next few weeks. I've going with some 24 lb. injectors a 190 l.p.h. pump and a lightning MAF sensor, JBA headers and a reburn. I've polished the throttle body and matched the elbow as well. I'm sure I won't see an increase in mileage with these last mods probably the opposite but was looking at squeezing a little more H.P. out of it without putting a huffer on it.

Thanks GearHead_1.
A few other questions.
Is the exhaust side exit or back? Where did you buy it?
Have you noticed any cooling problems with the underdrive pulleys?
How do you control the fan? Where did you buy it?
Could you not have adjusted shift firmness with the handheld programmer?
Appreciate the help.

The exhaust is a single in single out setup. It has a 3" out behind the rear wheel. Truck runs cool as a cucumber with the dual fan set up. Dual fans have redundant capability, dual controllers with the low fan set 10 degrees below the high fan. The low fan is also wired to the A/C, if it's on the the fan is also. Picked the fans up from Mike Troyer. In my opinion Transgo is the way to go for firming up the shift. The SuperChip will also take care of part of this problem but won't give you all of the benefits of a shift kit. I've used Transgo kits for a long time and I really believe that they have paid for themselves over the years. I've never had a single transimission falure. I haven't had any first hand experience with handhelds. SuperChip's new kit would probably be worth looking at. From what I've read I don't think it can handle some of the mods that I'm making in the near future however.

I've noticed with the three 5.4 F150's I've owned that mileage gets better with age. (the truck's age that is ) It seems the first real break is around 10k miles, then again at 30k miles. Guess all the parts have to break in. With 46k on the clock, my '01 SC is now getting 14 around town and 16-18 on the highway. It makes a huge difference being around town - I like to accelerate and hate deada**es who don't pull away from a light like they've got a purpose in life. I had a commute for a while that was 60% stoplight traffic and my mileage was 12-13. Blah.
YMMV, NPI, HLT, etc
