Need Advice on Transmission (?)

Hello,

I may have a problem with my 2001 SuperCrew. This afternoon I had to get on the gas this afternoon to get across a line of traffic from a stop sign (at Stop, cut across 2 lanes of traffic to get in the road). After about 300 yards, I came to a stop light. When I mashed the gas, it was like the transmission hung or something. The engine pushed and the rpms went up, but the truck sort of crept along. It was as if it was having trouble with 1st gear. After I got up to 10-15 mph it still seemed like it was hesitating a little. I pulled off of the road and manually geared down to 2nd then first and put on a little gas. Did not help, so I put it back into drive went up to 25-30 mph (guessing - definately not faster) and geared down manually once more. It sounded like the transmission caught and it has worked fine ever since (only about 28 miles afterwards).

I have a little over 18,000 miles on my SuperCrew and I do not normally get onto the gas at all (don't want to put any more gas into the thing than I have to). Only when I really need to, which isn't that often. I have had no other problems with anything.

I plan on checking the Transmission fluid tomorrow morning. Anyone have any advice?

Thanks -
Mike

Your truck is under warranty! Go ahead and check your fluid; but get that baby to your dealer ASAP!

I did check the fluid and it is OK. I drove it yesterday and it seemed to be fine. But I did not accelerate the way I had to on Friday. I did do some steady fast accelerations, worked fine. There again like I said - I didn't put the accelrator all the way to the floor.

Thanks for the advice - looks like Tuesday my baby will go to the doctors office.

A similar thing happened to me a few months ago when my truck was about 6-8 months old. It happened one time and one time only. I mashed the pedal to the floor and the truck practically stopped moving, hesistated for a few seconds then took off at very high rpms.

I have made dozens of similar starts since then without being able to reproduce the problem.

A guy I work with has an Expedition with the 5.4L engine and he says that his often hesitates for a few seconds when he puts the pedal on the floor. He has had it in the shop and they "can't find any problem with it".

Thanks for the info. I have been hesitant to try it again. I guess I should to see if it will - cars are like computers (what I work with daily) - when you take them in for repair - nothing happens.

Wildcatter - When it happened to you did you think it was the engine, transmission or what? I am thinking right now I will also hear "We cannot find anything..."

Thanks again -
Mike

I really don't know, but my gut tells me the engine and transmission are fine. I'm guessing it was something to do with the computer control. I don't know much about the computer, but I have been told that there are several aspects of one's driving behavior that the computer "learns". Perhaps it had to "learn" something???

i'm pretty sure the 4r70w tranny does not have "learn as you drive" electronics so i don't think you can really on that theory. however, that isn't to say that it might not hiccup on occasion while it's thinking...

btw, the 4r100 does have "learn as you drive" electronics...but that tranny is not available in the s-crew.

If it learns while you drive, mine had a stroke or amnesia or a 'blonde moment' last weekend and went into two gears at once during acceleration.

It pulled the truck down in speed like someone hit the brake.

The truck is in to the dealer now for tranny repair (no third or fourth) -- and since it's 6k miles out of warranty (but 3 months until 3 years old) -- Ford is not fixing it for free.

The truck has NEVER been off-road or abused.

So much for Ford "Tough".

Good luck.
