Gas Mileage

I have a 2002 Lariat Super Crew FX4 with the 5.4EFI, 3.55 limited slip, moon roof, rear sliding glass, 6-disc changer, captain chairs, towing package, tubular steps, and color Bright Red over Arizona Beige.

I was wondering what kind of gas mileage that you all are getting with this style of pickup and motor. I have been getting only 13 miles per gallon in town and driving home everyday. It only has around 1800 miles on it so far.
Thanks for your input.

I have almost the exact same truck (minus the moon roof and captains chairs)

From new to about 20,000 miles I averaged 13.5 mpg around town and driving to work. After 20,000 miles, the MPG started improving and I now average 15.5.

I suspect under good highway conditions (and reasonalbe speed) I could probably squeeze another 1-2 more mpg out of it

The only good road trip I've been on since hitting 20K was towing about 3500 lbs (car and trailer) and another trip towing about 4500 lbs (tractor and trailer), both trips at 75 mph. I averaged around 11-12 mpg.

Same truck more or less,
Before 4.10's = 17mpg city/highway
After 4.10's = 15mpg city/highway

Mine is a 2wd with a topper, but the same otherwise. My gas mileage ran about 13mpg city until it hit the 5000-6000 mile mark. Now I get up to 17 mpg mixed driving. And if my foot was lighter, maybe even better. I know that the 4X4's get a little worse than the 2X4's, but after a few more miles it should improve.

I just bought a 2002 F-150 very similar to yours. With the 5.4 V8 I'm getting about 15 mpg in city. Not great, but it is not bad for a truck this size.

I have 1192 miles on mine, and have used 69 gallons to date for an average of 17.2 MPG. Mine is not a 4x4 though. I am extremely pleased with the mileage so far. I drive 70 MPH for 10 miles to the city, another 2 miles to work in slow traffic. I can hardly wait to see what mileage I get on the highway only!

Cool Well....

See below for description of truck...

Right now, I have just about 1200 miles and I am getting just about 14.5 but most of that has been to work and back (less than 5 miles) and I only have one road trip this past weekend and I think I was getting around 16 at 80 MPH. It is stilll breaking in though and I see sporadic mileage. Worst I would guess at about 13.5 and best somewhere in the 17.5 range.

I've been tracking the fuel consumption on my 99 SC 5.4 w/3.55 for the last 2 years (pretty much since new) I've gotten as high as 18.1 MPG (US) on a pure highway trip but have had it drop to 9 MPG (US) around town when it's -30 to -40 Celcius around here in the winter.

You can view the spreadsheet at http://www.tutshi.com/f150/

Just got back from a trip from San Antonio to Dallas. I was stoked when I got to Dallas driving 80-85 whenever possible I averaged 19 mpg going. Not so on the way back, maintaining a similar speed pattern and fighting a constant headwind, it was like I was back in town and averaged around 13.8 mpg. I have no doubt that my choice to travel at the speed I did affected the mileage, but was surprised at the difference from wind resistance.

Oh yea, I have a 2002 2wd xlt with 5.4.

Mine has about 65K and I've been watching it every tankful. With a 4x2, I've steadily been seeing 14-16 MPG doing 90% freeway driving using 85 octane gas and a tonneau cover.

OK, here's a new scenario for ya, I have 5200 miles on my truck (5.4 w/ 3.55's)and installed my 305/70's (33.2" dia.) the day I drove it home. I have checked my mileage every tank and it has been a very constant 12.5 average. Here's my question though...Since the tires threw the speedometer off a good 5 mph at 60 mph (if indicating 60, then actually doing 65; yes, I checked it) then the odomoter has to be off by some similar amout. Which would mean that at the end of a tank when the odomoter says 280 miles (for example) then that number is incorrect and should actually be higher, like say 300??

Am I looking at this the right way? Anyone know for sure? Because I think 12.5 mpg just can't be right even with 33" tires.

I get between 10 and 14 in town, and between 16 and 18.5 highway. Of course, I live in oregon, and our speedlimits are 55 everywhere (except portions of I-5), so much of the time, I'm only driving 65 or 70 You know how it is, some days I wear heavier boots than others.

Galaxy, you are right about your speedo/odo meter question. It's a simple ratio. If you're speed ratio is 60/65, then your odo ratio is = (65*X)/ 60= actual odometer miles
Where: X = #of miles shown on odometer.
Get one of the new Superchips MicroTuner's and you can recalibrate your PCM for the tire mods, plus pick up a few HP's, and MPG's at the same time. Mine should be here tommorow and I can't wait!

My truck is an '01 4x4 Lariate 5.4, with K&N FIPK, Gibson SS, and BBK TB.
