17k miles and squeaky brakes?

Hi there,

I have a 2001 SuperCrew 4x4 orp with the 5.4... anyway, the truck only has 17k miles on it, and the brakes, sounds like the front, are making a "medal scrape" sound when I pull up to a stop. Are the brakes covered under wattanty? Also, the other day when I was offroading in the mud, the "ABS" light on the dash board illuminated... what could cause this on such a new truck? The truck is only 3 months old, please let me know if you have any suggestions!

Thanks,
Wesley

Wes,

Regardless of mileage, if the truck is only 3 months old I would absolutely bring it back to the dealer. If you put 17K on it in three months you are driving non-stop and therefore have no use for brakes..... If you keep on driving this way, your going to rack up 68,000 miles the first year.......

How far do you drive everyday? You must have a long commute or just stay in it all the time........which is not a bad thing. I still would take it back to the dealership though since it is still under warranty and see how they could weasel out of repairing it. Good luck and let us know what they say.

sometimes mud gets in the brakes and really messes them up, so maybye that was why the ABS light went on when you were off-roading. I have no idea about the general squeaking though.

Mine started squealing at about 12,000 on the backs. Took to dealer and they cleaned them real good(yeah right) and they still squeak. Their probably gonna give you "It's normal wear and tear", so don't be suprised if they don't want to give you a whole new brake job!

My front pads lasted till about 18k. My daily commute in Atlanta is a killer on brakes. I was really mad about it until I looked at the brake pedal and noticed how worn it was as well.

Good luck!

Lightbulb

Just wanted to pass along this Ford brake story.
My wife's 95 Windstar had the front brakes replaced at 60K.

Well the rear brakes finally didn't pass inspection, at 92,000 miles!

The tech said the front brakes do 80% of the braking but, sheez!

Mileage has nothing to do with brake wear.
Brakes wear out by Stopping, not Going!!!
A friend of mine wears out brakes in 20000 miles on both of his vehicles!
It's all about How you drive.
People who run the highways can get very high mileage out of brakes, obviously.
But, people who do mostly city driving, can greatly extend brake life by anticipating your stops, and stopping easily, instead of slamming to a stop at the last minute.

That's my .02 worth.

I hit my brakes 8,632 times before I replaced the rears.
Not only did I brake at the last minute, sometimes when I got stopped I was on the other side of the intersection.

Never got hit though. People could hear 'em squeeling and see the sparks flying from a mile off.

(Disregard my previous post about mileage)

My dad has a 2001 Screw 4x4 and had to have his front brakes replaced at 29000 miles. They were not covered under the warranty. According to the dealer they are out of warranty at 12,000 miles. His front passenger side brake pad on the inside was shot. He replaced all of the pads on the front and had to have that one rotor turned to correct the problem. Apparently there may be some problems with pads on the 2001 Screws!
