Need Mpg Feedback
I WILL BE PURCHASING AN F150 SUPERCREW BECAUSE I JUST LOVE THIS TRUCK. BUT I WILL BE TRAVELING QUITE A BIT FOR BUSINESS AND WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT KIND OF GAS MILEAGE ALL YOU 4.6L AND 5.4L 2WD OWNERS ARE AVERAGING SO I CAN MAKE A WISE DECISION. I WILL BE DOING VERY LITTLE TOWING, MAYBE AN 18 FT. BOAT(ABOUT 2600 LBS) ONCE IN A WHILE BUT THAT WILL BE IT. I'M REALLY LOOKING AT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO TO CONSIDER WHETHTER THE 4.6L IS THAT MUCH BETTER. THANKS!! GUYS.

I have just under 10,000 miles on a 4.6L 2WD. Normal driving consists of in town driving, although probably 1/2 of the 10,000 is highway miles (when I get out of town, I really get out of town). I have kept a spreadsheet on every drop of gasoline so far.
Average: 15.82
Low: 12.82
High: 19.02 (Texas & OK Panhandles = FLAT)
I was hoping for better, especially on the highway mileage. The power is adequate on the 4.6L, but I would consider getting a 5.4L.

I also have spreadsheet data of gasoline and mileage with 17K miles and 12 months, the max has been 18.2, min 12.9. The max was with the Tonneau and all highway, although w/o tonneau the max was similar and all highway with tailgate down. 13 weeks with the tonneau, I have experienced about a 6.6% gain in mpg avg. The 18.2 highway mileage was from Raleigh to Cincinnati (through mountains in NC, VA, WVA), haven't really had an opportunity for "flat" highway mileage.

We drove 3889 miles round trip from Kansas City to Los Angeles. Mileage for the trip was 18.2 -- 4.6 with 3:55 gears and 22k miles.
Drove 80mph in UT, AZ, CO, NM, NV -- 75 the rest of the time and carried about 400lbs of gear.
The MPG has been getting better as I get more miles on the SCrew. First trip to Yellowstone with 8k miles only averaged 17.

I just got back yesterday from a 3-week 5400 mile roundtrip from south Louisiana to California via Carlsbad, NM & the Grand Canyon, and several other mountainous areas. Neary all highway driving (although some of the "highways" were twisting mountain roads climbed in second gear with the pedal down low). I have the 5.4L, a hard tonneau, tires pumped up to 35 psi, use the cruise as much as possible, carried two adults and three kids, and had the bed full of suitcases and ice chest, etc, and adhered mostly to the speed limits (OK, maybe a couple of miles over), and I bought only regular gas (86/87 octane).
Low mileage for the trip was 17.4 mpg. High was 19.9. I got aound 18.5 on most tanks.
Interesting to me is that I got the best mileage climbing the mountain roads at slower speeds with the 86 octane gas. I got the lowest mileage blasting through Arizona and New Mexico on the flat interstate at 75 MPH (it was windy). In my experience the main factors affecting my gas mileage are 1) speed and 2) use of cruise control. I can almost 20 mpg on every tank if I use the cruise and stick to 65 mpg or less. The hard bed cover may add a half of an mpg or so.
I have to confess though, on a long trip I'd rather sacrifice a couple of mpgs and put the pedal down to speed up the trip.
Now driving to/from work is another story. I live smack in town with 25 mph speed limits and stop signs on every single corner. Average mileage to/from work is about 12 mpg. No highway miles whatsoever.
Incidentally, I'm 6'1" and 245 lbs. I sat in those hard seats with the side bolsters for nearly three weeks, driving up to 11 hours per day on some days. I was surprisingly comfortable for the entire trip. Reclining the seat a little and using the lumbar support made things pretty comfy.

Just for grins, my '01 SuperCrew gets around 11 mpg. It's a 4x4 and got the 5.4L engine and 3.55 LS rear. Most of my driving is stop and go below 45 mph and approximately 5 miles a day with an occasional 30 mile trip every so often. If I don't do the 30 mile trip, my mileage drops into the 10 mpg range. The best I've gotten is 15 mpg.
Wildcatter, you discovered what the Europeans have known for decades. Firm seats are much more comfortable on long trips. Soft squishy seats don't have enough support in the right places.

I have about 18K miles on my '01 (5.4L 4x2, 3.55LSD). My worst fuel economy (stop and GOOOO!, really kicking the throttle) was 12.75. my best was 20.66 (on I-95) driving from Baltimore to Portland, Maine. If you set the cruise bellow 2000 RPM, you can get from 18-21 on the interstate. My around town average is 13.3-14.7.

I agree that you will not find anyone who has the 5.4 wishing they had the 4.6! I've got 1100 mi. on my '02 Screw, so far I'm getting 14.6 thats 65-35 (65%in town,in traffic) using 87 octane. I really like this rig!
