My 3 week old SCREW has revealed its first problem. While making sharp left turns at low speed (10-20MPh) I hear a squeal/scraping noise coming from the steering column. I found a thread that described a clicking noise coming from the steering column - that problem was diagnosed as the clock spring associated with the air bag. I'm not ready to run back to the dealer yet, I'll wait for a while to see if any other problems crop up. I hope not. Has anyone else had this problem?

Are you sure it's not the power steering "hiss". That's normal. But it should happen when low speed steering in either direction.

Good thought, but this noise is definately coming from the steering column. I'm familiar with the power steering hiss you descibed. The pump will even squeal if you peg the wheel left or right.

Don't notice this noise on gradual left turns and the wheel isn't pegged when I hear the noise. I plan to experiment to night to see if I can repeat the problem consistantly. I'll also play with the steering tilt to see if that makes a difference.

My 02 does the same thing, has since new(had it 6 months). Sound like plastic scraping against plastic. Does not do it all the time.

 

I've been getting the same noise since about the time I bought my '01 last Nov. Curious to see what anyone finds out since it's tough to find time to get to the dealer to have them check it.

Was also wondering if anybody has experienced a 'groaning' noise (right front?) while making a left turn at ~10-20 mph. Only happens occasionally (3-4 times in last 6 mos.).

My SCrew has a very noisy steering system as well. Loud pump hiss and a squeaky type noise from the column. The column noise is only noticable at very low speeds(almost stopped).

 

Has anyone been back to the dealer on the steering hiss? My 1 month old 2002 SCrew only hisses at me when I turn to the right. And at VERY low speeds. Not every time either
