2001 Screw
2001 Screw
Hey there! Jenn from Maryland here. I bought a 01 Screw Lariat back in October and have just started customizing it. Got a few questions:
1) I have a Duraliner bedliner installed. I want to put a JASON Hugger Tonneau cover on it. Will I have a problem installing it? Will it fit properly over the bedliner?
2) I want to install a dual catback exhaust - which one do you guyz recommend? I heard the Flowmaster 50 Series and I really like that, but the Gibson dual is a bit cheaper. Opinions?
3) Is a chip really necessary?
That's about it so far. I hope to supply you with pics of my progress. Here's what I'm starting out with. So far, I've tinted the front windows at 35% (not legal in MD, crossing my fingers that I won't get pulled over)

Nice... a gal with all the mods in line... ready to individually kick butt and take names.
Not sure about the topper or the exhaust but, on the chip, my personal opinion is, no, not necessary. I don't see the gain. You have to run premium and, with the type of driving I do on a daily basis (stop and go), it's just not feasable. If I was driving two hours worth of Hwy miles every day... hrrm, I'd have to think about it. It's just not worth the gain to me... JMO
Ahh yeah, where are my manners? WELCOME TO THE SCREW OWNERS SOCIETY. We're a pretty tight knit bunch... If you've got questions, SOMEONE on the forum has an answer (or at least a smart a$$ remark (typically made in a joking manner)).
GOOD LUCK and WELCOME!

Hi Jenn. I am sorry I can not help you with your specific questions. Some one should be able to post some helpful replies. If not try using the search feature. I just wanted to wish you luck with your truck and welcome you aboard.
JenIreland,
Welcome to the world of SCrews! You'll love your truck!
I have a Duraliner and the only problem I had with it was when I put my Retrax bed cover on, the clamp mounts on the bed cover almost lined up with the protrusions that keep the Duraliner up against the upper wall of the bed. You're bed cover may be different than mine so it might not be a problem for you. Mine just had specific points to clamp to and not much leway in moving them front or back to get around the bedliner protrusions. I just got some smaller clamps and they did the trick. The bed liner is acutally tucked under my bed rails so it's pretty much out of the way otherwise.
Can't help you with the cat back as I haven't done one yet either. Seriously considering it but haven't gotten up the nerve to fork over the bucks for it.
As for the chip, personally, I'm not gonna do it. I've got the 5.4L engine and a HEAVY foot. I go 10 miles one way to work in stop and go traffic every day so running premium all the time isn't something I'm interested in. I've considered the flip chip but haven't driven a chipped truck yet so I guess I don't know what I'm missing
I did put in a K&N washable filter and got about 1.5 mpg improvement. I think part of that is due to the throttle response improvement. I'm not on the gas as much now. Well worth the $45 in my opinion.
Best of luck and enjoy the new truck!

I have had my SuperChip Flipchip for about 7 months, and would recommend it to anyone who would enjoy some extra scoot. I took the chip out when I got my truck serviced and was itching to get it back in. I drive 30 miles to work 70 mph, and 30 miles back in slow and go traffic, and have found it a very worthwhile investment.
I would recommend just getting the regular SuperChip, over the flipchip (I have yet to "flip" it).

Jenn,
I will agree with most of the people here. I have had my SCRE for 10 months and just 8K miles. I have driven one with the chip and did not see much difference with the chip vs just premium gas. There is a difference I believe with the Hypertech Powerprogrammer but be ready to shell out some $. I put a MAC CAI kit on my truck that I really like. It is like the K & N FIPK but about $100.00 cheaper. All Chrome Air Return. It looks just like the Air Firce One also.
Just my opinion.

Hey, thanks everyone!
I'm going to pick up my new (used) fiberglass tonneau on Sunday. My Duraliner IS tucked under the rails, so I'm anticipating a successul fit.
I'm definately gonna install the K&N, can I do it myself?
I also drive only 12 miles to and from work in stop and go traffic, and have a heavy foot. I don't think I'll invest in a chip yet.
What kind of exhaust do ya'll have? I'm looking for something fat sounding, but not obnouxous.

OK, I throw in my .02, The first thing I did to my 2001 screw was true duel exhaust, us screw owners have it lucky, we have duel cat. converts, (one for each bank), they cut your pipe just above the "Y" and welded in new 2.5" pipes, ran them back to 2 ea three chamber flow masters 2.5" in and out, then ran the new pipes up and over the rear axle and exit at a 45 degree angle, (kinda like the old trans am angle), the sound is awsome, they talk to you lightly in town, but when you pass some one, they clearly say, don't mess with da Ford, sounds mustangish, I have had people with there windows up, snap there head around to s
see what was eating them, I would have it no other way....
I payed around 380.00 out the door.

jenn...
Welcome!!!
In my opinion the $325 I spent for my SuperChip Flip Chip was the best money I spent in mods. I love the firm shifts....and the added pep. As for fuel costs..... a tad higher yes... maybe .20 per gallon so on a 20 gallon fill up you spend 4 bucks. To me it is worth it.
As for exhaust .....see my sig. I went to a reputable muffler shop and had them build it just over 300 installed with nice big chrome tips --- you can hear it at normal driving but not annoying.... when I tromp on it .... WOW very nice!!!!!!!
I also would recommend a FPIK induction system...I have Airaid and many people also like airforce 1
then there is the sound system,,,,,,,,,, love mine...
can you tell i enjoy my truck.... ???
take care

Thanks guyz.
True dual? I haven't crawled under my truck yet, but I have two cats? Interesting. I'll have to look this weekend.
That sounds like a kick @ss sound system. I had a 96 Seville STS with a killer sound system, then when I bought my Screw, I was like... uh... what the hell? I swear, Ford has the worst stock sound systems of any vehicle on the road. My 89 Ranger sucked also. Well, just something else to throw money at.
Thanks for all your suggestions! I'll be sure to give ya'll updates and pics of my progress.
Hey... love those beach pics!!! I'm such a "girl" that I'd be afriad to get sand in my carpets. I panic when I see a layer of pollen on my beauty.

I second, chip it!!
I did the Borla catback, nice rumble over stock, yet not too loud in my passengers opinions (rear seat that is). Also just did a drop in K&N filter for $50. You're dropping a lot of extra money for the FIPK or anything like that, and based on the dyno runs I've done with this truck and my 2000 SCAB, save your money.
Spend it on a chip. Superchip, Flipchip, whatever. The ol' butt-o-meter will thank you.

Sup Jenn.
I have Borla Cat back single in dual out the back w/ phantom tips.
looks nice and sounds good. Nice quiet rumble at idle, gets louder as you accelerate. Are NOT as loud as Flowmasters.
I have an aerocover lid. Has a little built in wing tip on the end of it. Sticks up around 2". Looks sweet IMHO.
And get a SUPERCHIP" ASAP! Perhaps first, you will not regret it...
Nice to have you on board.

Hi Jenn
I would spend the extra bucks and go for the Magnaflow.
You'll save them in the long run as I speak from experience with
Flopmasters.
They like to split after a while.
I tried both the 70 series Flow and the comparable Magnaflow
on my S_crew and got better performance with the Magnaflow.
Roll on, Greg

I have built many 97 newer F150s. Each one got a 2 chamber 40 series Flowmaster. The one I use has a 3in. inlet with dual 2 1/2in. outlets. The muffler costs about $55 from www.summitracing.com and I usually buy stainless tips from www.mbrp.com and have a local exhaust shop install it all for about $175. It yields a great sound. On my new truck(HD Screw) I kept the stock tail pipes and tips and just replaced the stock muffler with the Flowmaster. I have also found the FIPK systems from K&N help and give it a cool sound under the hood. I bought a chrome version off www.ebay.com for $135. Hope this helps!
Jenn,
I put a Gibson single on about a year ago and lost low-end power. If I replace it, I will only consider the Magnaflow as it actually improves low-end performance.
Have a Good Time shopping for all of the goodies!
