Hey I am interested in seeing a retrax bed lid on a supercrew. Let me know if you live in Dallas area and don't mind me viewing.

soon

I'm buying one in three weeks. All the research says that it's the best out there. Kinda expensive, but worth it.

Talking

Hey that is great glad to finally see a response to my question. I am very interested in seeing one of these in person on the supercrew. I have only seen the pace edwards in person and wasn't to impressed. That was also not on a supercrew but a supercab. If you wouldn't mine somebody eyeing over your truck(like anybody would mind), I would be really interested in seeing the retrax when you get it on. Also if you would leave some details on where you got it, how much, and if you are going to install or not. I don't live to far away from you in McKinney.

no problem

I'd be glad to let you see it when I get it. Send me an email and I'll send you some other photos of the system on a Screw. I got these from Randy at Retrax. These particular photos are not on their website. My email address is gotvx@hotmail.com.

Extinguishfire,

I'm not in you neck of the woods but do have a retrax on my truck. Check out the pics at the bottom of my website www.cheldelin.com/TheTruck/Index.htm

If you want different angles let me know and can take a few for you. I parked next to a guy the other day with a roll-n-lock and he saw my retrax and took a double take. With the roll-n-lock you can't use your bed extender without having take it out and flip it over. Now that I've seen the roll-n-lock version actually on my kind of truck.... real glad I did the Retrax.

Hey Cheleri, I appreciate your posts but have already seen your pics and they are great. I just want to get an up close and personal look at the cover. Before I buy anything for my truck I like to research well before making my decision. I have seen the pace-edwards in person and wasn't very impressed with the vinyl covering on top. One thing I will have to check into if I get the retrax is building a sturdy box for the rolled up cover at the front of the bed. I have heard that the casing at the front is not very sturdy and items sliding around in bed can be damaging. I would think if you have to big of an item crash into there you could have a problem with the cover not unrolling and rolling like it is supposed to. Anyway thanks to all for the posts. And keep me informed about your cover Grishfish.

Hey Cheleri,

How much did you pay for your Retrax (incl. shipping)? Did you order direct from them?

I really like the looks of the Retrax over the Pace-Edwards Roll-Top and Trac-Top Covers and the Roll-n-Lock, but the Retrax sure seems pricey at $950 (quote from Retrax).

Worth it in your opinion??

Thanks,

Montinore,

I got mine at a local tonneau dealer but they are on line as well. Check out http://www.davestonneaucovers.com. Being local, I didn't have any shipping charges, but I did have to pay tax, bet you get a better deal on the shipping. If my memory serves me right, it was ~$850 +tax so it came out just over $900. I was considering it and the Roll-n-Lock version at the time and 2 things pushed me towards the Retrax version.

First, the beds on our trucks are small enough as is. The Roll-n-Lock version narrows the bed down to less than the width of the tailgate. Yep, I said less than. A 2002 FX4 with one of the Rollnlock's parked next to my truck the other day at the ball park and the guy had seen my cover a week ago but at night. He came over and saw mine and just started swearing. The Retrax looks a lot better and is more functional because it only narrows the bed down to the narrowest part of the bed (just in front of the tailgate) which easily saves you 8 inches of width. He can't use his bed extender with the rollnlock, it's too narrow. He as to take it in and out instead of just unlocking it and pivoting it in and out of the bed.

Second, the rollnlock is vinyl coated alluminium that rolls up on it's self in the canister at the head of the truck. I had heard after a while if they are left rolled up while the truck is driven, they tend to show wear spots on the vinyl unless you coat em with silcone spray regularly. Maintenance PITA if you ask me. The Retrax actually rolls up in a spiral guide that the bearings run in so it doesn't touch itself when rolled up. The bearings are another plus for the Retrax. The rollnlock doesn't run on roller bearings so doesn't move quite as nicely as the Retrax.

The canisters they roll up take about the same depth off the bed (9 - 10 inches) so that was a wash. But I have to admit, the canister construction of the rollnlock is better. It's actually a 4 sided canister with drain holes and is pretty tough looking. The Retrax is actually only a piece of sheet metal (fairly thick but I've dented the he** out of mine carrying loose stuff in the bed) that is shaped like 4 sides of an octagon.

I'd buy another one though. Well worth it as far as I am concerned. I didn't want a shell, if I had wanted and SUV I would have gotten one. But didn't want a full tonneau cover because of having to take it off to carry anything of any real height.

My nickels worth, okay maybe a quarter after all the rambling

Thanks Cheleri. Very insightful post. So you say with the Retrax, the bed extender is fully functional with cover sides installed on rails. Also, do you think it would be possible to fabricate a box to replace the cheap box it comes with?

EXTINGUISHFIRE,

I would bet there is... I'm just not a metal worker or have access to tools to give it a whirl myself. The tracks that it rolls up in are made out of some thick plastic stuff. It's gotta be close to 1/2 inch thick. I've thought about taking mine off and (it mounts with serveral screws on each side into the tracks on each side) and seeing what a local metal shop can do to either straighten, refabricate or suggest to make it a little more durable. Just hasn't been high on the list right now cuz the current one is doing the job. It's just seen better days
