Question Brake Time!

I now have 30K miles and it's time for front brakes. Rear is about 60% worn.
My question is: Should I just replace pads and not turn the rotors?
' just want to see what experience everyone is having.
Are these rotors able to be turned more than once?

Thanks gang!

Yes! Turn the rotors! Even if they look OK, you'll at least introduce a premature wear pattern to the new pads. I don't know how many turns you can expect to get thru the life of the disk (varies with driving conditions), but a reputable brake guy shouldn't have to take much off if they look good to the eye.

Had my fronts done at 35K (rotors too). My suggestion is to shop around - the dealer wanted over $200 to do them. Went to the local Goodyear store and they did it for $129.

Sounds like the SCREWs eat the front brakes up really good. I guess the extra weight just kills em that much faster.

Is everyone getting there brakes replaced every 30-40 thousand miles or is that not normal?

Definitely get the rotors turned, you'll be thankful later.

My 99 SC I just returned had 35k miles on it, mostly city driving, and the brakes were only 1/2 worn. Have they changed anything since 99? Brakes should last longer than 30-40k...

The life a brake pads and shoe really depends on the way you drive, if your fast and hard on the brakes, well the longavity will not last. but generlly you should do 2 fronts to one back. And you should get the rotors surfaced all times.

I don't know about other peoples past experiences with Ford trucks and brakes but I hope the SCREW is much better.

My 96 Bronco with 115K had:

4 Replaced Front Rotors
3 Replaced Front Calipers
1 Replaced Master Cylinder
4 Replaced Brake Lines
13 Sets of Front Pads
all with never having to replace the rear drums/shoes.

Combination of Ford and Raybestos pads....Needless to say, I stopped taking it to Ford and had the poor brake shop constantly replacing stuff under their warranty. They were very happy when I got rid of it.

So far so good with 17K on the SCREW. If I make 30-35K on one set of pads I will be ecstatic.

Am now hitting 58K and had all the pads done at 45K when they started to make noise. The dealer said that all pads were very close in wear, also had the rotors turned which I was against but, at 58K things are working smoothly. I thought that I was the only one having short (in my opinion) brake life. Glad it's not only me but I think they still should last longer .

Thumbs down

I barely have 30k on my "01 SCrew and it needs rotors as well. One or more is warped and I am getting a vibration/hop when I brake, from the rear, I think.

I am planning to replace all 4 rotors and pads real soon. I will probably go with Ford OEM pads, but I am looking for an aftermarket upgrade on the rotors. Not sure what to get yet.

It's funny to see this topic, because I've got about 36K on my 2001 and the brakes are jerking a little. I think I'm gonna get them turned and get 4 new pads.

Does anyone know the name / type of pads that don't make brake dust? I've heard them advertised, but I have since forgotten. I'd like to give them a try.

I had my rotors turned at 23k and was told that I probably could not have them turned again(?)

Needed brakes again at 40k, had some bad vibrations this time.
I really did not check to see if the actually needed to be replaced, since I wanted some new slotted aftermarket ones anyway.

Hold on, no I believe they were wore out...yeah, thats how I got the approval from my personal accountant (wife).

Went with the Cryogenically tempered and slotted rotors.
All the data and information I could find have pointed to nothing but positive feedback.

Have had them on for about a week or so. Initial reaction after lengthy break-in period... seem to bring her down more quickly.
Not necessarily alot. Since I ride her very hard, I purchased them primarily for the lifespan (2-300% longer life span). Also they happen to be semi slotted which help them to bite a bit more

Will post pics if any one wants to see them...

Late..

I just had my fronts done (again!). The first time they started squealing on the right side a bit. When I took it back (2nd visit) the dealer said it was overheating the brakes and created a "hot spot" on the pad. Now it has a squeal on both sides when applying brakes. Sounds like its only on part of the rotor though (maybe warped?). I dread having to deal with the local delaership. I've had nothing but bad experiences at Theodore Robins Ford in Costa Mesa, CA.

Anyone know a GOOD Ford shop in the Costa Mesa area? If its good I'll drive a while to get good service.

BTW - When I had the service to replace my solenoid (other post) they told me I needed rear brakes soon, so I scheduled a saturday brake job. After 5 hours of being in the shop they said there wasn't anything wrong with the brakes and that they didn't need to be replaced. What a waste of a day.

brakes

I had all 4 brakes replaced at 50k miles. They had plenty of pad left, but I was getting a 'shimmy' as I braked. I had the rotors turned too. I got an awful squeal/pull from the left front...had to have that one replaced/re-turned again. All is working fine now.
