Screw on long trips
Who's taken their Screws on long trips? Planning trip from Cleveland, OH to Jacksonville, FL in late May. My wife, brother-in-law and sister-in-law are coming along and instead of flying, we'd think it'd be cheaper to drive and split the costs.
My wife and I made the same trip in her BMW X5 last Thanksgiving. Not a bad drive and the X5 was plenty for 2 adults (great SUV by the way).
With 4 adults (my wife and sister-in-law stand at 5' 4"; me and my brother-in-law are about 6' 1") I think there'd be plenty of room in the Screw but I'm concerned about the backseat comfort.
All opinions, tips, suggestions are welcomed. Thanks.

Hi Sean!
We took our 02 King Ranch on a long trip from home to Daytona for the 500. The truck ran great and was very comfortable. It was only my wife and
myself so can't help you much concerning rear seat comfort. Although I did crawl back to take a nap for awhile, just to try it out. My wife loved the heated seats and now loves to drive the truck.

Sean:
Rear seat comfort is an issue.....on long trips where stopping, stretching and changing positons in the cab is OK, then you'll be fine. Only bad experience we had was a long winter trip...bumper to bumper traffic, very cold weather and no opportunity to stop at the necessary times.
I think you'll find the SCrew great for a long trip. I can't think of another vehicle I've owned that's been better for four (or five) like we do).
Have a good trip.
Best regards,
MrBill

Have taken three separate trips where men (5'10" to 6'01") sat in the back seat the entire trip. The trips were around 8 hours long each.
Upon arriving at the destination, I pressed them hard for an honest evaluation of the ride. Their response has been "Oh yeah, I HAVE been in the back seat....". They enjoyed the ride from the back seat as well as the folks in the front.
Have a fun trip!

Last year we (2 of us) made the trip from Toronto to Fort Myers (26 hours) straight in my Dad's supercab.
The truck itself was great for the long trip. The trick is just like going in a car, make sure you rotate everyones seating position and you will be fine. I for one would not want to do such a long ride in the back seat exclusively (in any car)

Hey J-150,
We have done the Ontario to Fort Meyers in 26 hours a few years ago. It was with the Aerostar van not the F150.
We have done as much as 700 miles in a day towing a 31 foot trailer with our 3 teenagers in the back seat. Can rotate with the wife and kids but she won't drive with the trailer so rotation is limited. The back seat is O.K but not as nice as the Aerostar we had with quad capatain chairs and everyone has arm rests. and reclinable backs.

Trip to Vegas, 310 miles each way. Comfortable enough up front to where we did not need to stop, one person in the back complained about the seats not being comfortable. But after a while got used to them. Basically streched out across the back and went to sleep...
So you should be fine, but the back seats can be an issue, just maybe get some extra pillows, blankets, etc back there.

Had I been a member of this club BEFORE I took my 5 hour trip from Indpls to Milwaukee, I would have known my CD player would overheat... besides THAT, the trip was very comfortable for the entire family.

Thanks for the advice. I've never had to get the back seat so maybe I'll get back there sometime soon to see how they feel. Who has the captains chairs in the back in their screws? Do they recline? Big difference in comfort?
Sean , I have the same truck you do right down to same color , I have the leather Capt. chairs up front and I did spen a little time in the back , bbut I have to tell ya I was very happy very good traveling truck we drove about 1,600 miles out and picked up a 4,500 travel trailer ,a 1972 frolic ;-) and by the time we got back home we had traveled 4600 miles total , lowest milage was around pulling the trailer over rolling hills in high winds at and above hiway speed. best milage we have seen is around 17 mpg , pretty darn good I thought , I typicly see around 13-15 mpg without towing! my trip was in July , and I never had trouble with overheating truck or CD player ;-) 6 disc, love my super crew , wish they would bring out the baby 6 cyl. 4.6? turbo Diesel
We took our Screw on an 11 hour roundtip from south Louisiana to north Arkansas last month. Had 3 kids ages 3-15 in back seat. They much prefer the truck back seat to the back seat of our "land-yacht" -- a Mercury Grand Marquis. They had more room and also more room to stash thier junk nder the Screw rear seats. We were also able to take a lot more cargo with the Screw (we have a lockable hard tonneau cover).
We were so impressed with the Screw that we are going to take it in a couple of weeks, during the Easter break to visit the wife's folks in Michigan. That'll be about 4 days of driving. The kids all cheered when we said we were taking the truck.
By the way, on the Arkansas trip, going up a lot of hills, still got 18 miles per gallon. Not great in general, but pretty good for a big truck fully loaded with people and gear.

Last year we took 2 trips, 1 to New Orleans in the wife's 2000 Olds Silo (touring suspension) and 1 to Yellowstone in my SCrew.
Of course I was all for the Screw on both trips but the wife thought the van would ride better than the truck so we split the trips.
When we returned from Yellowstone my darling wife said " I think we should take the truck on long trips in the future" . While the Olds had a very smooth ride she really enjoyed the height and view from the SCrew and it "really does not ride that bad". This is a major admission from my wife because trucks are like lawn mowers to her "a mans thing" .

Me and my brother-in-law will be doing all the driving. Even with the height adjustable pedals (she's 5'3" on a good day), my wife is terrified of driving the SCrew and my sister-in-law won't go near it. That pretty much settles who be in front and who'll be in back.
