Trans making squealing noise on shift
Trans making squealing noise on shift
I have a 2001 SuperCrew with the 5.4 and (I’m pretty sure) the 4R70W. I have noticed that when I jump on it hard off the line, I get a rather disturbing squeal or squeak noise on the 1-2 shift, and now that I think about it, I may get the same thing on the 2-3 shift as well. Much as I’d like it to be, it damn sure isn’t the tires, so I’m about positive it’s the trans that’s making the noise. I rarely run the truck that hard, so it’s not as though the trans is abused. Any ideas as to what the problem could be would be appreciated, as I like to show up at the service drive armed with some knowledge as to the problem, to avoid service writer BS.
Also, this thing holds a gear like no truck I’ve ever had. Often times in 2nd or 3rd gear, even full throttle won’t give me a lower gear. Is this the standard for this trans, or is it a malfunction? If it’s a standard issue, then does anyone know of a mod that improves this without major surgery?
Thanks in advance for any help.

I have exactly the same thing with my tranny. I too have the 4R70W in my supercrew, and I wondered the same thing. It isn't nearly as bad with my Superchip in, because it doesn't hold first gear quite so long when I punch it. I would like to know what it is though.
Yep I get the same thing and I thought it sounded like the fan belt too. But it's nice to know that I'm not the only one. Also I did not notice this before my superchip. Maybe the later shift and quicker shift is causing the belt tention to drop for a second???
Dosen't bother me, not gona worry about this one.

Mine's just the opposite. My chip made it less pronounced. I could have sworn the sound was coming from underneath the car, not under the hood. I already have my FIPK sound from the hood, and I can tell that is where that one is. I guess I just want a few more opinions before I agree it's the fan belt.

There's a whole lot of people on this board, and I am sure they all have opinions, but not many are gonna be able to hear your truck squeal.... I say the belt....

Its your belt, just had them replace mine. That fixed it. Man it was a pain the the keester to change, I felt sorry for the guy who did it. (I watched him change it) Nothing in the tranny will make that noise.

It'd actually be a relief if the problem was the belt, as those are substantially cheaper than transmissions, (why do I care though, its under warranty). I'm going to look into it further, and I'll let you guys know what the verdict is.
I have a feeling that it was easier to spot a squealing belt in the older trucks because there wasn't any underhood insulation. Maybe with the insulation, the sound is coming in a more indirect route, leading one to believe it's the tranny?

Same belt squeal on mine too. It started at 11,000 miles.
DOES THE FACTORY WARRANTY COVER THIS ONE?

BTW, a couple (maybe more?) members said their dealers discovered problems with the tensioner and replaced that AND the belt.
