Exhaust options for 2001 Screw's
I have been searching for ways to make my 2001 Screw 5.4, with 3.73 gears, LOUDER!
Called alot of places, and turns out, the only option I had (because of the 4! catalytic converters) is to REMOVE THE MUFFLER ALL TOGETHER!
Anyway, I had a place called Pro-Dyno in Tempe, Arizona streight pipe the exhaust, and WOW! It sounds Beautiful!
Because of the 4 Cats, the exhaust is muffled just right, and sounds like a Bad *** truck.
Have already added the Airaid intake system with K&N filter, as well as the PowerAid throttle body spacer.
within the next couple of months, I will be swapping gears to 4:56's (because of the 315/75/16's) , and adding a super chip.
SO, for anyone wanting more SOUND out of their 2001 Screw, All you have to do is take that restrictive piece of CRAP out!

I went with a Flowmaster Series 40 to dual outlets on the back. Instead of using that crappy chrome tips (which rust out in 6 months) I had stainless steel tips put on. The sound is awesome, and I prefer it better than a straight pipe. Sometimes those sound wheezy. Your friend may get better HP by using a good muffler instead of straight pipes.
I agree a good muffler will sounds better and in many states it is illegal not to have one.
Oh and Kevin, the SCREW dosen't come with the 3.73's so I asume that you put those in? If so did you notice much diffrence between the stock 3.55 and the 3.73?

Actually guys, I have a friend with a 40 Series flow master, single out the side, and it was not all that great. I was there when they did the muffler, and had them dyno the truck with the Gibson exhaust, and after they removed it, I GAINED 10HP, and roughly 15 Ppf of Torqe. I don't think it sounds bad at all, in fact, I like it much better then with a muffler.
Another thing, it takes 1300 degrees to change the color of stainless steel, and when we took off the Gibson, it was very evident, that it was NOT letting my truck breath as much as it claimed to (muffler was litterally turning dark grey/black.
YES, my 3:73's are factory installed. I ordered mine early in 2001, and the dealer gave me the option so I took it. I am not sure why some of you have had problems with this, maybe it is not offered now, but when I ordered mine, it was an option.
If I went with 2 pipes from the block, thus putting the catalytic converter count down to 2 per pipe, I would halfto have a muffler, and would probably go with the Flowmaster 40's, but as it is now, I see no reason to change.
YES, I will gladly sell my 3:73's to whomever wants them, just e-mail me at kevindeanna@msn.com

No mufflers at Lake of the Ozarks
Right after I got my '01 Screw, I was walking through a parking lot when another Screw drove past. It had a great deep throaty burbling sound to the exhaust so I went over and asked the driver what kind of replacement muffler he had. I was quite surprised when he said that he had NO muffler on his Screw. Said he was from around the Lake of the Ozarks in Southern MO and it was common practice down there to remove the muffler on F-150s. If I wasn't leasing, I'd be tempted to take off mine.

I originally went with the Gibson SS cat back system, but it was too darn quiet....I pulled off the Gibson muffler and replaced it with a Flowmaster 40 series and I am a real happy camper....good sound, no loss oflow end torque with 3" single outlet....love it....
Yup, the Gibson is so Darn quiet, I couldnt stand it. So, I kept the 3" pipe that came with the cat back system, and the muffler just threw the streight pipe in, and added a very nice tip to go allong with it.
I can't help but grin when I start the engine, its just really nice sounding.

I installed the Flowmaster y-collector (dual 2.5" in - 3" out) and a Ravin Z-55 muffler (3" SISO), and kept the stock tailpipe. Sounds great, not too loud, and my gas mileage went up a solid 1.5 MPG.
I love my Flowmaster 40 series. This is how a Ford truck should sound stock
!
How can I tell what gears I have? Is there an easy way?
What do you guys think of pulleys? Is it a worthwhile mod?
