How much play in the brake pedal?

I am wondering how much side to side play everyone has in thier brake pedal? I have about 1.5-2 inches myself. Does anyone know how to tighten it up? It is annoying, because I use the bottom right corner of the brake to stop, so when I have so much play, the pedal sometimes slips sideways out from under my foot. Just wondering!!

Take it back to your dealer and have it fixed.

Hey Derek,

Man, that doesn't sound right at all. I'd get that truck to the dealer on the double. If your foot slips off the pedal then there is definately something wrong with that. I don't think my pedal moves much if any but I haven't measured it either. I would guess that maybe 1/8" to 1/4" would be acceptable to me but like I said, I haven't measured it, I'm just mearly discussing what I think would be acceptable.

Now that you've brought this up, I'll check mine later and get back to you.

Anyway, your situation doesn't sound like something to take lightly though 'cause brakes are a lot more important than the gas pedal, it's your life, everyone in your truck and in your truck's path at stake here.

Use caution...have this checked by dealer or mechanic.

its going in on Monday! I guess it has something to do with the adjustable pedals? But there is way to much play in it to feel comfortable!!! I will let everyone know what they say!!

I have it. Dealer said its normal. It moves around 1.5 inches. No problems with it so far. Have you had a stuck accelator or starting problem?

I can push my brake pedal to the right about 3/4". 2 inches definitely sounds excesssssive.

this is not normal. power adjust pedal unit get's loose. they replace unit. and all is fine. not all have this concern. but some get loose. if they do not believe you. go to the front line and check out a few new truck's. and then tell them to do the same. it's not normal for the pedal to move side to side.

Angry NO WAY!!!!

I think this is crazy if they or anyone else thinks this in "normal" It is the BRAKE aka STOP!!!

This did make to check mine (02 SCREW) and as yet I have NO PLAY.

Make this a priority RIGHT AWAY

If the dealer says "It's normal" ask them to put in writing that IF you where to hit something due to the pedal moving, will all repairs be done under warranty (including any lawsuits!!!) ??!?!?!?!??! NO WAY, this is just wrong

Brake pedal play

Derek: I've noticed the same side to side "slop" in the brake pedal in my '01. Reading the responses from the various members has provided the kick in the butt I needed to get the thing into the dealer sooner than later. I'll measure mine tonight but I'm guessing it's well over an inch.

Took it in Monday, got it back Tuesday night!! They replaced the entire power pedal unit!!! They couldn't believe how much play there was! All is well now I only have about 1/4" of play now, but they said that was normal! That is much better than 2"!!

How did you make them change it since they said it was normal? Thanks.

A small amount of play is normal, but mine was excessive!! Almost 2 full inches side to side!!! The dealer measured it, and that is when they decided that it was excessive!

The best way to get the dealer to replace it would be to find a good dealer if yours won't. . A good dealer should be there to help, not to hinder, they do have limitations on what they can do, but they also have some leeway.
