I'm not sure what mod your talking about, but I would think that it's a low beam light.

Unhappy Fog Lamps

Ralderman:

This mod was to increase the brightness of the fog lamps..Using a 9005 lamp would do this, with a little fixing of the pins on the bulb, and some say they didn't have to do anything to the pins. But the 9005 comes in low or high beam...Question I had is do I use the low or the bright?
Thanks..

Low beam for fog lights. High beam for driving lights.

I used the high beam. I have not had any problems with them being to much light(the point at the ground, not high enough to blind people in front of you). I never had to make any modifications to anything. I think the person that started this mod on here back over a year ago never really tried to get it in there. I have replaced mine 3 times already(trying newer bulbs). The most recent are the new Sylvania Silverstar's. They all went in with real problem. Just be sure that when you lock it in, it is seated inside the housing all the way. I had water in my fog light rite after I put in a new pair, and when I looked closely, I could see that I hadn't put it in all the way. Hope this helps

I did some research on these bulbs after I read about the mod, and I doubt that there is such a thing as a 9005 low beam and a 9005 high beam. The spec for the 9005 bulb type is a 65W bulb with a high beam patter. The 9006, which is probably what I will be using, is a 55W bulb with the center portion of the light pattern subdued (low beam pattern). The "9005 low beam" is probably a 9006.

Both the 9005 and the 9006 have the same 90-degree connector, and are interchangeable, package-wise.

After reading that more than one person with the 9005 was getting flashed by oncoming traffic, I think I'll go with the 9006, which are advertised for use in low beam and fog light applications.

Rivers,
I'm not calling you a liar, but there is no information available which suggests that there is both a low beam and a high beam 9005 on the market. However, I couldn't even find the GE specs for the 9005 on the web today. Every spec I could find for the 9005/9006 shows the 9005 having no mask (i.e, "high beam"), and the 9006 having it (i.e, "low beam").

If indeed there is a 9005 low beam, I would buy it! Perhaps I'll drive out to my nearest Wal-Mart and check it out for myself (Wal-Mart is a little further for me than K-Mart).

Low beam and high beam are differentiated by the center "mask" at the tip of the bulb. If the low beam version has the mask and the high beam version doesn't, then these are marked correctly.

I am going to stay away from the "high beam" pattern myself in my fog lights, but wouldn't be afraid of the 65W versus the 55W 9006, or the 42W 9145.

Sounds like we've beat this to death.

RICCOG, which flavor of bulb do you find to be the best for this fog light mod?

Thumbs up

I too use the 9005 lights and have never seen two versions for this light (high or low). I have never been flashed yet. I did have to make a small mod to get my light in the socket though just by cutting a small piece off the plastic ring on the outside of light. I just noticed one of my lights is already burned out after 9 months. I think i used syvania bulbs...anyone recommend a bulb that will last longer?
