Roof Rack for the Screw

I've been thinking about getting a roof rack for my screw, but the Yakima racks are really expensive. Has anyone tried to fit a rack from the Explorer onto to screw?

Bruce.

Why?

Isn't that what the bed is for?

Just Kidding,

I haven't seen a roof rack but have seen a basket. It depends what you want to put up there. www.performanceproducts.com sells roof baskets that might work.

I have been looking for a roof rack that would match the bed extender. I like the looks of tublar roof racks I see on stock Nissan Xterra. Some Land Rover have this same type of rack. I would like to put some lights on it and get a front grill/push bar to match.

This is not a new idea. Ford has a very short bed Excrusion with these type of mods it has been showing off at auto shows.

Rocket Screw - go to this website:

http://www.autoaccessory.com/cgi-bin...oRg&start=2120

In the center of the page, you will see a small picture of a yellow SCrew with the type of roof rack that you are looking for. However, I could not find any info on it. You might want to call them to get the information. I also remember Stillen having one like this, but I inquired about it about 6 months ago and they said they were not going to mass produce the rack - but they may have changed their mind.

I don't know the model names or numbers, but I do know that Steel Horse makes one. I had originally thought about doing it myself, but I couldn't force myself to go and drill holes in the roof of the truck.

Don't laugh but I've seen a tubular rack in a JC Whitney truck catalog. I don't have model #'s but it looked similar to the rack that's on the Xterras.

rack for the screw

Last year I was in an adventure race and our support crew was using my Supercrew. We had to transport four mountain bikes, two canoes and a ton of gear around for a few days. I couldn't find a bed rack that would fit two canoes plus four bikes so a teammate and I did the only logical thing. Make our own. Quite proud of it I am. It only took an afternoon to weld up. I can easily install it in my Screw in about 5 minutes. It's held down with four cable buckles attached to the frame and then to the bed tiedowns. Once the buckles are turned tight the rack cannot come off accidentally but it can be attached and unattached without tools. The 2x4's that hold the canoes on can be pulled of easily and the bike rack has two forward facing and two backward facing positions. the forward ones have a slot weld into the frame so you do not have to remove the bike's front tire and the rear mounts require the front tire off as the bike's forks are clamped on with a typical fork clamp welded to the frame. May look ugly but it sure is a handy rack made out of scrap medal.
