SuperCrew or Sport Trac?
This has been an ongoing struggle/decision for about three months now: whether to buy a Sports Trac or a SuperCrew. I have paged through Edmunds.com and never found a direct comparison of the two.
It really looks to me like the Sports Trac is a Frankenstein version of the SuperCrew. Unfortunately, it's those Frankenstein parts that not only set the Sports Trac apart from all of the other trucks on the road, but also adding more features and a generally more "advanced" looking truck.
I know that posting this question on a SuperCrew website is probably gonna bring out a little bias on the subject. Still, I'd like to know what other people think about the Sports Trac and how it compares to the SuperCrew.

Do you want a big brother or a little brother? Seriously, I considered both vehicles as well. After taking a test drive in both vehicles, along with considering the pros and cons, I decided on the Screw. It was an easy choice for me. The Screw is an awesome truck. Everytime I see a Sports Trac on the road, I thank God that I had the common sense to choose the right vehicle.
if you want a serious truck that offers comfort and great size - go SuperCrew.
If you like the look but don't need the size (i.e. maybe your wife doesn't like something as big as the S'crew) fo SporTrac.
I have one of each.
My wife will drive the S'crew but she prefers the smaller size of her Sportrac.
I feel cramped in the Sportrac.
I'm already thinking about a diesel SuperCrew when this lease expires.

its really up to what you will be doing with it. My dad got the sport track becouse it weighed less for pulling it behind the motorhome and it held 4 people better than a jeep (needed 4X4). He still likes the Trac but wants to buy a Polaris Ranger, and needs something to haul it in ( he has a Freightliner FL-60, but that is a little of an overkill ) He will probly trade the extra expedition in on a supercrew, a 02 Harly or on a Lightning.
I can give you a little bit of insight ... I bought a Screw , my parents bought a Sportrac ... for them this was the best option, they needed something that they could tow behind a motorhome, hold 4 adults, 4WD, can tow a pontoon boat, and haul stuff in the bed . this met all their needs, I drive it often... here's what I DO like about it , the rubber flooring cleans up easily, the back glass rolls down like a window, smaller so it parks easily, enough power to tow the pontoon , and a little better on the gas (V6). What I don't like is , it's a bit cramped for elbow room , no V8, seats are not as comfortable as my captains chairs, less leg room in the back for adults.
As for the supercrew , I am very pleased with it ! Wish I knew that the deisel was comming out ( i would have waited ) I guess you have read alot of the posts on this board so I wont go into all the good things we like about these trucks you can see that for yourself ... as for the bad things , don't let that put you off , their is good and bad to everything just the bad gets more input . At least you know what to look out for !
If you really like the concept of the sportrac then I would suggest you wait for the one that will be built on the expidition platform. I might even trade my Screw in for that !

Hey cyberhiker, thanks for the good and the bad on both sides of the lines. As a city driver, a lot of what you said about the Sports Trac seemed to suit my needs. I've been picking over some of the truck sites looking for a really stylish Screw or Sport Trac and managed to find one that I really, really loved:

I know, it's a Sports Trac, but I haven't really found some of the options I like for a Screw. A hard tonneau cover that folds in the center for one. I also really love those windows (though I imagine they can prolly be customized on either truck).
What I'd really love is a Screw / Lightening hybrid. The Lightening is a totally sweet looking truck, but I got more than one buddy that I wanna share my ride with..

I love my SCREW, but one thing that the SportTrac has on the SuperCrew is the smaller size. Parking my truck is not always an easy task. If you don't need to extra size inside and don't plan to tow anything big, then the SportTrac maybe what you want.
I'll tell ya though, everytime I pull up next to a SportTrac (and dwarf it) I almost want to say, "hey there little brother how ya doing?"

I think they do make the same style cover for the Screw as is on the Sportrac ( my parents have that cover too )... do a search of the threads here , I think it's called an access cover... but in my opinion I like the hard cover from Snugtop , they have a picture of it on their website http://www.snugtop.com/wn_01ford_expl_fiberg_lid.htm
I also like the rear window in the sportrac, but it will not fit the Screw ... it was discussed here awhile back , I cant remember the reason though
if you check some of the back issues of Truckin Magazine ,(May 2001 ) they had a custom one in there a few months back that was SWEET! they shaved the tiedowns for the bed off ... shaved the roof rack off ... lowered... air suspension...shaved the tailgate handle... custom roll pan ... removed the plastic bed rails & rocker panels...carbon-fiber dash trim... billit grill... billit wheels...custom orange & black paint ...nitrous oxide...custom stereo ... it was sweet ! wish I could blow money on mods like that !
by the way ... in the same issue they fetured a custom Screw & a custom Excursion ! I should probably wear a condom before thumbing through that magazine !

If you want a Screw/Lightning wait for the 2002 Harley. It is a 5.4L supercharged package... will be pricey though, $36,495 sticker and bound to get well over sticker.... There are links to pictures somewhere on this board....
Oh yeah, the Harley will have an optional Dark Shadow Gray color.

The Screw is a big truck, but in our choice the extra interior room was a factor. About the only time I wish for a SportTrac is in a shopping mall parking lot. But I've learned to buy almost everything online-- problem solved!
While it would be nice if they made a Lightning Screw, Kenne Bell makes a supercharger kit for about $3700. Yes, a lot of banana's, but it may be something to consider. Talk about making a sleeper.....

What is up with the exterior of the Sport Trac on the SNUGLid site? It looks like there is an aluminum wave of some sort running along the side. That's a nice paint job if its custom work!
cyberhiker: what did you mean by "wait for the one that will be built on the expidition platform?" I thought the Sport Tracs were all explorers?

For what its worth, I went through this decision process about 6 months ago. Test drove both vehicles extensively and after about a month of research, I decided on a loaded 4x4 ST. The main reason was that I thought the Screw was just too big (I had to do a 3 point turn just to get into my garage).
Fast forward 6 months. After using my ST quite a bit for hauling, I sort of regretted not getting the bigger truck. I really like the ST, but the bed is small (and I have the extender). As it turns out, I may be able to get a Screw after all...
Just took my ST in (has 3K miles) for service and it turns out that it needs a completely new engine. I was shocked. I have not had a single problem, other than some oil leaking. The truck has a bad head gasket and the dealer feels that a new engine is warranted.
But having bought this truck with the intent on keeping it for awhile, the last thing I want is a dealer installed engine.
So right now I am negotiating with Ford to buy back my ST with the idea of upgrading to the Screw.
Bottom line? The ST is a nice truck. It fits four adults and a dog comfortably. But you plan on carrying anything that has some size to it, the Screw is a better choice. Plus, in hindsight, I think the F150 is just a better truck overall.
Gook luck.
