Question couple questions from a Screw prospect

I'm seriously looking to purchase a 2002 Screw 4X4, but have been pondering over a couple things.

First, it looks as though most of you have the 5.4 engine. Does anyone have any info on the 4.6? Enough HP? Is the gas mileage any better with one or the other?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

PS Also looking at the new Dodge Ram Quad Cab, but have a 98 with the 360 and struggle to get 13 mpg hwy!!!

Thanks a lot, GW

I have a '01 4x4 with the 4.6. If I drive reasonably conservatively, I get about 18 mpg. (Basically, keep it around 70 on the highway, and no launching it from stops.) My commute is about 2 miles each way to the train. If that's all I do, I get about 13 mpg. These numbers are about the same, or even just a little better than what my 4.0L Wrangler would get.

There are times that I wish I had a little more power, but not enough to really regret not getting the bigger engine. On long hills I'll slow down a little, but not enough to worry about or anything that a little more throttle wouldn't take care of. Passing and getting on the highway are no problem.

Bruce.

I fought with the same question...even posted a thread here on this web site...finally got a 2002 screw with a 5.4L...1 mpg difference between the 5.4 and 4.6. I like the extra power with the 5.4L and is sure runs smooth!

I debated the same issue a few years back. Previously I chose a 2000 SuperCab 4x4 with the 4.6. Power was 220hp, and I added a Gibson side swept exhaust, Superchip, and just the K&N filter in the stock can. I figured I got most of the hp of the stock 5.4, and better economy. One of the reasons I went with the 4.6 was the window sticker EPA ratings- I usually get pretty much what they list-- must just be my driving style. The best I ever saw was a 17.4 avg on one longer trip, although most of this was at 70-75-- I'd bet if I drove 55 it would get a little better than 18. These are big trucks....(well, for me anyway)

This time I planned on getting the same truck, but Screw. We looked at a red 2002 w/4.6 (now 230hp this year I think?) and a 2001 w/ 5.4l. The financing was better on the 01, so we went that way this time. Rest of the options between the trucks pretty much the same: 4x4, tow pkg, offroad pkg, etc.

Even though it's still got less than 1500 miles, my first several tanks have averaged about 15. I just added the Superchip again, and a Borla catback, plus my old (cleaned) K&N filter in the stock airbox.

My thought is that I'll be able to pretty much get the same mileage with the 5.4, plus have a few extra hp when I want them.

My .02: make the engine a lower priority choice than say color or other options, unless you do a lot of towing. Personally, I don't think you'll be disappointed with either.

Good Luck!

Go for the 5.4

Its got good torque at any rpm.

My buddy had a 4.6 in his Extended Cab and he thought it was a dog.

If your getting a 2WD and are not planning on towing, the 4.6 does get better gas mileage and has good power from those I have talked to. But with the 4WD I decided to get the 5.4 (without hesitation) and I may tow in the future as well. If your concerned about gas mileage DON'T even bother with a 4x4 much less the 5.4.

Also do your self a favor, get a K&N FIPK and a cat-back for your self. Also if you don't mind paying a little more for gas the Super Chip is bitchin' !

These mods will give you more power regardless of what engin you get (percentage wise) and in turn your engin will not have to work as hard. Therefor there is the possibility of better gas mileage, assuming your foot is not cast in lead...

Thumbs up

Bit the big one today and traded in the dodge for the Screw with the 5.4!!!! There's no comparison in ride, drive and noise. Ended up gettin all the toys, but what the hell, I live in this thing for 6 months a year. Hope to get what they post on the window, 17 hwy, we'll see after it's broke in.

Thanks a lot for all of the input. First impression on the truck is killer.
