Anyone put a light in the center console or under the tuneau?

The new truck is great but the center console sucks at night after you remove the tray and want to change cds on the changer. I have seen several old posts ( I searched ) of guys doing a mod on the cupholder, but nothing for a inside center console light. I imagine you could just run it underneath the carpet and hook it up the to the cab's light switch, but dunno which wire.

Also, I don't have a tuneau cover yet, but would like some light under it once I put it in. Has anyone tried that?

How about that sweet little ride behind my truck. 2001 Porsche. Wooo doggies. Wouldn't mind one of those.
Be tough to go muddin' in though.

Hey lookin4ascrew,

Hope my info doesn't end up like that other thread, "ifin you kno what I mean".

I added a new Kenwood 10 disc changer into my front center console of my '01 KR Screw. Man, let me tell you that it's a major pain in the A$$ to fish something under that carpet. It took almost every tool I own, just kidding, and a couple of hours of cursing and getting pissed off to get that damn cd cable under the carpet. I had an '00 Scab that I originally had the changer in and it was a breeze to intall in that one.

As far as a light in the console, I think it's an excellent idea. I think I would like to have one myself. I will look into it and see what I can come up with too.

I'm not into truck bed covers so I wont even go there.

bed cover

Not sure about the console....but I do know that most bed covers some with lights built in. If you happen to get one that doesn't any local store should sell a battery powered push light that just sticks to any surface, for somewhere between $5 and $10.

I put a light and 12 volt outlet under my soft cover. I also put an automatic tailgate lock in the tailgate and a mercury switch in the tailgate for the light. I bought the mercury switch from Radio Shack on their internet website. The light and outlet came from Walmart.

By the way if you look very close you can see Usama in the background!

ScrewBigRed - Your light installation looks pretty nice. Where did you go for the source of the 12 vdc? Was it necessary to run wires up to the cab and fuse panel or did you tap into a place under the bed? If you ran wires into the cab, what was your route?
Thanks for the info.
Tom

tom63301,
I ran one power wire through the loom that came with the automatic electric lock. I'm sure you can get loom elsewhere. The loom was run right along side of the existing left side frame wiring. I drilled a hole as you can see in this picture for the wiring. Although I am not a big fan of drilling new holes, I made sure it was repainted properly. I also used a grommet for the loom through this hole.

The ground was picked up through one of the tie down bolts.

The power was picked up on the solenoid next to the battery (bottom terminal). I used a fuse and fuse holder from Walmart.

Did you just make a bracket for your light and outlet? Or what did you use?

tfratzke,

I used an angled piece of aluminum (since I had it laying around). I’m sure steel would work just as well.

The dimensions are:
12” overall length
2.25“ wide on the angled portion with the light and 12V socket.
1” wide on the angled portion below the light
0.125” thickness of the aluminum.

I painted the entire aluminum bracket black. The bolt holes are lined up with the existing clamps for the cover.

I hope this answers your questions.
