What is this?

I just picked up my new '02 S'Crew and have been checking everything out...well...finding things while modifying would be more accurate.

The rear bumper has a hole next to the license plate, and behind that is a plastic funnel (for lack of a better term) that goes back overtop the spare tire. I haven't pulled down the spare to see where it goes or what it does.

Any ideas on what this is? My Ranger definitely had nothing like it.

When I get more pics of the truck, I'll be putting them on my web site. Currently just my Ranger is posted.

Thanks!

Under your hood is a long handle which you stick in that hole to lower your spare tire.

That is a hole for the tire drop down thing. You put the rod (located under the hood up front) in the hole, the funnel directs it to the deal that it hooks into and then you crank it down. It drops the tire down.

Sorry about lacking all the technical terms.

Try pulling down the spare and you will find out real quick what that is. To pull down the spare you need the crank that is stored under the hood. Insert that though the hole in the bumper and the funnel directs the rod into the winch to crank down the spare.

Hope you enjoy your new 2002.

Thanks for all the quick replies! I'm sure that this is mentioned in the manual...but...well...you know. I didn't plan on fixing a flat any time soon, so I guess I just flipped right past that section...yeah...that's the ticket....

S'Crew is great so far! Only have about 100 miles on it, but will take care of that this weekend. Can't get enough of that Gibson SuperTruck Sound!

Thanks, Again!

Man! I wish I had seen this thread before.
I sent a letter to Ford complaining about,

...the most pitiful excuse for an exhaust I have ever come across!

Actually, it's the new interior exhaust system... For those late-night trips to Taco Bell.

But why wouldn't they funnel that into the combustion chamber?

Realy Guys tell him the truth, It's for when you have your mother-in-law in the back of the truck and you need to drop that 5th tire for support or go 5 wheel driving ask my wife she Knows, I had one come down on and older ford truck and she drove it all the way home like that, wasn't much left of the tire or bumper.

Hey always,

I guess you didn't have to think long to pick out your call name, "A". Based on your story about your wife driving with the spare hanging down kind of proves that. That's a bummer!

I kinda feel sad for mindbent, 'cause if he never had a truck before with the spare tire under it, then I bet he'll be posting some more threads real soon on similar topics. I'm not blaming him, gotta get your experience somehow, "A".

Glad everyone's having a good laugh at my expense...glad to oblige y'all being the...ah...butt of a few jokes.

Actually, I have had a truck before, but it was a '95 Ranger. The lug nut wrench undid a bolt to drop down the spare tire. Nothing so elegant as what's on the F-150s.

Had the Line-X put in today along with the Pace-Edwards Roll-Top. Both look great! James at Line-X in Mid-Atlantic Line-X in Eldersburg, MD, did the work. The bed is sprayed evenly and I only found one spot of overspray that cleaned up quickly. The PE was a bit of work for him, but it really dresses up the truck.

Looks like a great weekend for a drive in the Northeast!
