Should I buy a SuperCrew?
I have a '99 F150 XLT Supercab and am considering trading it in on a '02 SuperCrew. The reason for the trade is that I have a baby on the way and the 4 full size doors should provide easier access. But I am concerned about a number of threads on the lack of quality of the SuperCrews. Any comments? Should I do this?
I really think you will see these types of comments on any type of vehicle. It just so happens that this website is read and posted on by alot of people. If you read enough, you will see some good success stories too. I am about to go buy one and realize (just like any big purchase) that there may be some risks. You just have to cover yourself when you take them.
Just my $.02.
Remember, people are more likely to yell when they are pissed off than when they are happy. You're just hearing the yelling.

Jeff,
I've had my S'Crew about 4 months and 4 days, I have only had one real issue with it, front left axle bolts creaking...they were replaced....I have driven it 12,000 miles about 6300 in 2 weeks. It drives nice enough.....its a truck and I can live with that....If I had to complain....the A/C could be a little more powerful. I drove a 2000 F150 before this and it was not in the shop for the 14 months i drove it. I had a 1999 Shakerado...oops, i mean Silverado that was in the shop more than it was in my yard.....took me 6 months and lots of bitchin to get them to buy that back.......If someone said, and someone has...Quality is not Job One anymore..I'd agree...but in my view its still a might better than the other 2....

Jeff,
Get the SCREW!!!! I've had mine for three weeks and two days, still love getting in and driving to work (hate getting out and actually going to work)
Even though I'm totally biased, like most people on this site, I'll give my two cents...pro and con:
CON:
1. The thing is huge! Measure your garage if you are thinking of parking it in there (length is 226 in., if I remember correct).
2. It loves gas....but then again I have the 5.4L.
3. I've seen better paint jobs on my previous cars.
4. Wash and polish took me 5 hours! Wash only took about an hour...I go overboard whenever I polish my vehicles.
5. Glove compartment is a joke. If you put the owner's manual in there, nothing else will fit.
6. Stock stereo w/ 6 disk CD changer must be made in Taiwan. Mine goes out the window as soon as I get a couple of exterior mods done.
7. Gas tank is way too small (specs say 25gal). I get a little over 300 miles on a full tank (this must drive you mainlanders nuts, I'm lucky I can't drive more than a few hundred miles without being in the same place where I started).
8. Duh, that's all I can think of (the last one is kinda nit picky but I wanted to appear fair).
PRO:
1. It will turn heads! I actually had a Toy DoubleCab on order before I picked up the SCREW...glad I made the switch. Everywhere I go people comment on my truck (and I haven't even started "customizing" yet). If I had the Toy I'd be just another one of the hundreds of "little" trucks on the road.
2. If you get it, the 5.4L rocks. The thing won't do 12's at the drag strip but it pulls hard from every point on the RPM. Isn't torque what a truck's all about anyway???
3. The four real doors are worth the extra length. Part of the reason I bought the SCREW is if we plan to have kids soon, the wife and I have a truck with a real back seat for car seats, etc.
4. The rear seats fold flat and create decent indoor storage space.
5. I believe the door crack problem has been rectified and as long as you buy new, you should be okay.
6. Lots of is available on this website (as you probably already found out). There are hundreds of ways to customize the truck and declare your individuality.
7. The price really isn't that bad, I believe you will pay about the same for a SportTrack or Expedition....and the SCREW is much more versitile in my opinion (SportTrack is too small and Expy has no bed).
8. Insurance isn't that bad. My wife has a 2001 Limited 4Runner and the insurance on her vehicle is about $100 more (per 6 months) than my 2001 SCREW.
9. ......I could go on all day but you get the idea.
In closing, if I had to chose again I would still buy the SCREW versus any other truck/SUV. My only real complaint is I can't fit the thing in my garage, it's too long by 2 inches.
Let us Ford freaks know if you have any other questions.

Just a minor point, but the wheelbase and overall length of the Supercrew is the same as the Supercab. They just traded about an extra foot of cab for the foot less in the box. The legroom gain shows up as less than that foot because it is measured from where the back and seat cushions intersect and the supercrew has more (better) seatback recline angle.

I love my Screw. I do have some issues with it like hood paint, missing welds and broken plastic parts, misaligned headlight bezel and leaky rear cab mounted tail light.
Other than that, it's a great vehicle. I'm in the process of getting resolution on my concerns and I think the quality has generally gone down, but IMO the vehicle is still pretty damn nice.

Buy the truck!
I love this truck more than one should be allowed. I have ran off the road looking at others going down the road. No real problems. Hell, the engine could fall out of it and I would have it fixed or go get a new one. The truck is great, good lookin, smooth riden and very comfortable. Moon roof is awesome! It is a tight fit in garage, but so are any of them. Mine has clearence by about 1'.
Good luck & enjoy. You wont be sorry.

You might consider renting one, I did for two weeks just after I test drove one. 10 days of short and one long weekend trip, putting it through 'my' tests, plus played the 4x4 on some steep terrain and dirt roads, sold me. We bought the 2001 XLT with only the options we wanted, it was a hunt but the vehicle was found out of State in central Oregon, I live in near Seattle. We haul two kids and a horse trailer and enjoy it. Read and re-read the options stuff, don't settle for what's on the lot (unless it suits you.) Good luck.
get the SuperCrew. Here in San Francisco where city driving is somewhat a daily challenge, the SuperCrew is definitely a head turner. Just don't expect to parallel park like a Civi
