Question about auto lamps

I would like to set my light switch to auto lamps setting but I have tried that and my headlights don't come on until it's really dark.I would like the lights to come on sooner. Is there an adjustment so I can fine tune them for my taste?

Thanks

If your truck is like mine, there's a sensor under the dash board. A few little slots (Right in the middle of the dash, a few inches back from the windshield) let light in for the sensor. If you covered some of those slots, the lights would come on sooner. I covered mine completely, so the lights are always on.

Thumbs up It is adjustable...

First thing I noticed about my truck was the autolamps came on too late to make the option worthwhile. The dealer adjusted mine and they were fine. It has held that setting for a couple of years now so, I guess it's just a one-time thing.

Sorry, I didn't 'see' how they did it. I assume something under the dash where the small vent is.

I was worried when I asked for an adjustment that they would over compensate and I would end up with 'daytime' lights but, that was not the case. I was pleased.

I asked my dealer if there was an adjustment and he told me there was no way to adjust the auto lamps.
I'm going to call another dealer to verify this and if there isn't anyway to adjust them I'll try to cover up a couple of those slots.
I wonder what would look good but still cover some of the slots.

Question I hope your dealer was just confused about what you were asking...

In '99 there was an adjustment wheel on the dash to control how long the lights would stay on after you shutdown, from about 20 seconds to three minutes. They did away with this wheel but, it had nothing to do with the sensitivity of the sensor.

Read this:

If you don't want to take the dash apart yourself, print this off and give it to the dealer. If he still says the autolamps are not adjustable, say, "Fine, I want a new sensor.".

If it doesn't come on when 'you' think it should it's useless. You are still manually turning on and off the lights.

Don't make me come over there.

Unhappy PROBLEM WITH AUTOLAMPS

I keep reading on these posts (forgive me I am fairly new to the site), but I keep reading how most want their auto lamps to stay on/come on sooner, my problem is my truck's (2001 s crew/xlt) were working fine, turning on and off at the right times and such, however, now if I leave the switch in that position, they are staying on all the way to whereever I go, even if it is totally sunny out, they should turn on briefly when you start the vehicle, and then adjust. They do, however, turn off after the normal brief delay after the truck is turned off, it is just that I have my auto lamps- (dash dimmed, taillights, etc) ALL the time, which is not so bad but can make it a pain to see some things on the overhead console, radio and such. It is out of warranty so I am not going to take it in. Any ideas? Is this a common issue? Thanks in advance.

Doyeaco,
Sounds like you may have a faulty sensor in the top of you dash, something for a dealer to fix.

2001Red,
I removed the oblong cover on top of the dash and adjusted the little adjustment screw on the sensr under there. be careful it is delicate and it took a coupel of times to get it more like I wanted. Just play with it and see what you get.

Unhappy auto lamps

thanks for the info, guess I will live with it for now, don't feel like paying the money to the dealer right now, and our local ford dealer is horrible when it comes to customer service!
