Question Ford S-Crew compared to the Chevy?

I have been really wanting to get a S-Crew for a while now and have been doing lots of research, thanks to this site and all those who participate.

My fiance's parents just purchased the Chevy 4 door truck version of the S-Crew and I will finally get a chance to look at it up close and drive it later tonight.

I was wondering if any of you S-Crew owners have a had a chance to look at the Chevy and compare it to what you have now. Any strengths weaknesses of either vehicle? Pros or cons that I should be looking at? I have been a Ford owner for many years, but I always like to look at all the alternatives out on the market before buying something.

Thanks in advance.....

Frog,
I am assuming that you are referring to the Avalanche. I'm sure it is a great truck. Chevy has been building trucks a long time. Typically they build good looking trucks too, but not in this case. That thing is UGLY. How many Rubbermaid trashcans were sacrificed to build all of that molding? They should really reconsider with the next year model.
Just my opinion, though. It's your money.
Later,
RW

Yes, the Avalanche is kinda ugly to me- but I like some of the features of the rear seat/cargo bed area.

But that isn't the truck I was really considering. Chevy has a 4 door Silverado 1500HD that looks about the same version as the S-Crew:

just wondering if anyone else has evaluated this vehicle- I know it comes with a 6.0L engine (jeez that's big). Doesn't look like a moonroof is available and I really like that idea on the S-Crew.

looks like this is a brand new truck... don't know anything about it except it still has the same (somewhat unattractive in my opinion) chevy styling... wonder if it's shipping with the correct radiator though! :-p

I think you should just drive both and then decide. I agree with pesos on the looks, it's just not there.

Also, what will you be doing with this truck, can the SCrew's smaller bed get the job done. Although I think the chevy is a lil longer. Do you need that big of an engine? The 5.4 is plenty powerful unless you have some serious towing.

My moonroof is great!!

They really are quite different trucks. The Chevy 1500HD is like the old Ford F-250 Light Duty. Supposedly, Chevy made this 1/2 ton HD truck for marketing purposes i.e. more people are likely to buy a 1/2 ton than a 3/4 ton. As you noted, the truck only comes with the 6.0L engine. You get the choice of the 3.73 or 4.10 rear axle (with the SuperCrew 5.4L you get the 3.55). Hence, your gas mileage will suffer with the Chevy (unless you plan on doing a lot of towing or heavy hauling). The Chevy is about 11 inches longer and the wheel base is about 15 inches longer, which will make a real difference in day-to-day parking, maneuvering etc...The Chevy weighs about 900lbs more.

Test drive the trucks carefully, over varying terrain and try u-turns, 3 point turns, etc...

You will find that the Supercrew feels more like a limo compared to the Chevy's harsher ride. Plus, the Supercrew will feel more maneuverable.

The Chevy is a good choice if you need the extra truck. Otherwise, it is just going to weigh you down in the daily driving.

I probably would have looked seriously at the 1500HD or the 2500HD when I bought my truck. I originally started looking at the F250 Crew but that handled like a bus compared to the S'Crew and the F250 gas engine choices stink. At the time, Chevy just had the old 2500 Crew which wasn't much of choice IMHO.

Thanks for the info. I looked at the 1500HD tonight and it is a nice truck, but I noticed right away that it was longer than the S-Crew. I think meneauverability is definitely a consideration to think about for me.

The 6.0L was smooth on the very short drive we had it for, but I don't really need all that engine. The 5.4 would do just fine and the 4.6 may even fit the bill- I'll have to decide that at a later date.

And I can't let go of a possible moonroof..........

I just had to speak up. I just cannot find a better looking and feeling truck out there than the F150 Supercrew. That truck looks incrediable. Next to the chevy, it doesn't even look like the same material. I get looks all day long from Chevy drivers saying: "Thats a damn nice truck"

Just my opinion, but the Screw has a massive, mean stance. I dont think you would be disappointed.

Thumbs up

I've had my 5.4 Screw for 4.5 months now and am very happy. On occasion I wish I had a longer bed, but more often then not, I'm glad I have the shorter bed, parking, manuverability, that sort of thing. I've towed between 3,000 and 5,000 lbs from Boulder to Durango (Colorado) several times now, and have been extremely happy with the moter.
I get 18mpg empty on the return trip.
About the Chevy, if you are regularly hauling, or need the extra bed capacity, consider it or the F250. My truck is 70/30, play/work, so I don't need more truck, and I (like you), like the added ammenities I get with the Screw.
One more consideration, the Chevy is pretty new (in comparison) and it will be tougher to get a good price on it. You can get the Screw for invoice anywhere.

I do like the looks of the S-Crew better than any of the Chevy's. And I'm in the same boat as Brossman in that I don't often need a huge bed. I'm used to my 6' Ranger bed now, so only losing 6" of bed length with a 5' 6" S-Crew would not be a big deal. Might go have a closer look this weekend at the dealership for a 4x2 Lariat S-Crew. Not quite ready to buy one yet, but just getting all my information and homework done.

I have a 2500 pound boat to haul around occasionally so I'm would think the 5.4L would do that with ease. Looks like I will be staying a "Ford Man".

Thanks again to everyone for all the input-

Chevy owners have reported problems with the 5.3 and the 6.0 liter engines, pinging. They tend to clatter like a diesel and from what I've been reading and hearing from some coworkers, Chevy is not backing these engines up. Evidently what is wrong with the engines has not been discovered as yet and Chevy is assuming no liability.

If all your pulling around is a 2500lbs boat.....the Triton 4.6L engine would do the job without any problems.

I pull a 4100lb snowmobile trailer in the winter through the Canadian Rockies and have "never" been under powered at this weight!

Both Ford and Chevy/Dodge make great trucks...but I can bet that you will get a way better deal on a Ford than a Chevy any day of the week!

2001 SUPERCREW 4x4....great truck, tons of fun, great looks and well priced!

Chevy vs. Ford

I looked at the Chevy back in January when shopping for a new truck. At the time, the only comprable model was the 2500HD. This truck was definitely more truck like and a lot bigger! If you are going to garage it, make sure it fits! The SCrew is like a limo in comparison. If you need the extra truck then it might be for you but this was much more like the F250.

Also, it was tough to even look at one. Very few dealers had any in stock. The ones that did had one or two and they weren't dealing.
