Geez, the jury seems to be debating. I had no idea that everyone is so split over what they are using. I am leaning toward Mobil 1 but still undecided. Thought about asking the dealer, but what do they know anyway, and who really trusts them. I don't.

I said for now (less than 1K miles) I'm using dino 5w-20. HOWEVER, I would have no problem AT ALL using 5w-30 Mobil 1. In fact, I may do it around 5K if nothing else is out. I have used Amsoil in the past in my motorcycles in addition to Mobil 1 with good results.

20 weight is pretty damn thin oil....:> I'd feel better using that weight in a full synthetic..

I am going to stay with Dino untill 10K then its Syn...

I had a client that went to syn too early and we couldn't get the rings to seat for ever...

Those Vets and Merc's have different material rings and toulerances to adjust for running right out of the crate with Synthetics...

I'll just wait until the engine is broke in completely...

Mach I....that is a good idea..don't know how Ford rings seat...on my BMW moto's, I wouldn't put synth in until around 12K miles or the thing would never quit using oil.My Triumph bike...I could put synth in almost immediately because of tolerances..is 12K a good rule of thumb for a Ford? I haven't been on here long enough to have frayed in the oil and air filter threads..:>

Blue --you got it...About 10K is the general mileage on the motors...

You are right on that if you put it in too early, you will have a hard time keeping the engine from using oil(rings not broke in)

Just wait about three oil changes and be safe about it...

Also the manual says to use this new 5W-20, which is now avaliable at Wally World..
I will use this until 10K and then switch to Mobil1...

Good Luck...

Question

interesting hearing you guys talk about synthetic oils and how you are not supposed to use them until after the engine is broken in. why is it that i've never read this sort of advice in an owner's manual, in other words, directly from the vehicle manufacturer? i have read in various manuals that the use of synthetic was fine, but never the "wait until she is broken in" stuff. is this some sort of wive's tail, or what? anybody have proof that you shouldn't use synthetic right from the get go?

If the engine is setup from the start to run the syn's you can run them that way...

If not then I am going to wait for the rings to seat and engine to break in....

I believe that one major benefit to using syn's is the friction reduction(slippery agents), I dont know if it makes sense to try to break an engine "in" using friction modifiers, Isnt this counter productive???

I have been using Mobil 1 since the 70's, and this has been a standard rule for me..

Even if I am not correct, it does not hurt the engine to break it in and switch over...

On the other hand, if I am correct, you may make a grave error on the sealing of the rings during breakin(which I have seen too many times..)

Question

If it is defintely a problem to use synthetics too soon, why is there no warning about it in the owner's manual? You would think Ford would make it a point to make sure people don't put synthetics in too soon if it's a problem...maybe not.

with today's extremely tight engine tolerances, i'm not even sure there is such a thing as a "break in" anymore. i've owned seven brand new vehicles since 1990 and none of them "used" any more oil the first couple thousand miles than they did when i traded them in. for the record, i've never used synthetic oil.

They do warn about it in the owner's manual...use nothing but a 5w-20 motorcraft oil...

BTW--Syn oil is what the name implies-synthetic(man-made) base stock...not corn oil which is of natural materials...

I am not telling anyone to use it or not..just explaining what has happened to me in the past...I have know of two many cases in which it was used too early and the rings had problems seating...

Have a good day...

new corvettescome from factory with mobile 1
as Did my Triumph Tiger motorcycle , I believe my brothers baja speed boat also comes recomended mobile one , so he says. I use it in my Triumph and when I hit 10,000 milees I may switch my Screw to Mobile one, 6 quarts here is about $25.00 and If I do it my self the cost is very close to what it would be with petrolium based oil done by the dealer.
just put my K&N filter charger in tonight it was time for a new filter and all my prev vehicles have had them so I already had the recharge kit.... enjoy your Ford Truck, Skully

Skully,,I ride a Trophy12...love that Tiger too...

Yes, with the Trumpets I don't think it is a problem using full Synth right off the bat...in my Trophy I've been using semi-synth from day one and it is using NO oil whatsoever.

It is no wives tale about rings seating (depending on the vehicle). With BMW moto's, they would start out using a quart of oil for the first 1k miles during break in, then gradually stop to using NO oil at around 12K miles. These motors seemed to take a while for the rings to seat. Using full synth from the get go in these beemers would have delayed the rings seating for probably double the miles from my experience with other riders. However, the cure was to switch back to Dino until the machine quit using oil. The moral of the story is: if the motor is not eating oil from day one, then I don't see any problem using synth from day one...no harm done.

Just from past experience and oil usage tracking from other vehicles, I'll wait with the Screw until at least 6K miles....

Just my 3 cents...:>
