Cool

TonyK and 4x4 Guy,

Are you sure that bigger is always better?

I tend to like my trucks big in every way and my women normal, not too big.

TroyK,
5.4L piston slap has been a hot button issue in the engine forum for some time.

Go with the 5.4 and when its time to sell or trade the blue book value will probally give you credit for the bigger engine.

Just my 2 cents worth.....anyway who in the hell am I

Go with the 5.4L. My dad has a 97 F-150 Reg Cab with 4.6L. My 2000 Reg Cab 5.4 will get from 14 - 16 mpg in town depending how much I HOT ROD it and my dad's under normal driving get from 12 - 14 in town. The 5.4L is impressive in Horsepower and Torque. It also seems more powerful than GM's new whimpy 5.3L. The new GM pickup's have some serious quality problems.

Don't forget the leaky head gasket in the 5.4l.

5.4L is the way to go for anything you do!!!!
Well, It has been quite a while since the head gasket problem and the piston slap has been put to the end. The 5.4L is the way to go 260 hp/350 lbs of torque vs 4.6L at approx. 240 hp/290 lbs of torque. I don't see a big difference in gas mileage. The 4.6L is constently shifting in/out of gear and NO power entering onto freeways. The problems that I'm having is with the Expedition. This is much heaver than the F-150, so you need to have the extra HP/torque.

My 2001 4.6 will run circles around my old 99 4.6. The 99 was a great running truck, towed almost 8000 lbs. for 565 miles with no problem. The 01 is even better, a nice power increase that put the two engines closer together.

Thanks for everyones opinion. I probably will buy a CREW here in the next few months as the rebates keep getting better. You folks are great and your opinions are very interesting!

Grumps & others made some good points about usage that will help make a decision.

One thing I didn't see mentioned as a usage was off roading. The HP & TQ are not the only differences between the engines. The way the 5.4L is set up (different cam?), I believe the TQ comes on earlier and it has a slightly flatter curve.

The lower RPM to 80% TC (2000 RPM I believe) is a significant difference off road.

OK here we go...Here is a novel Idea...
Get the engine that best suits the user....

Ok I had a 97 xcab w/5.4 auto 3.55..loved it...would tow anything...About killed me in fuel mileage...best I ever got was 16+mpg..usually got 16mpg...about killed me for fuel bill...

Now have a SCrew with 4.6..love it gets 20mpg...25% more then the 5.4..better ride also...

If I need to tow anything I break out the diesel....The SCrew doesn't even have a tow ball on it...Best riding truck I ever owned...

The 5.4 has a lot of tow power...but does not come close to the diesel...I needed something more powerful then the 5.4 and bester mileage..so I got the best of both worlds with the diesel...

The 4.6 is a little week in the torque dept.
But fuel mileage is what is most important to me...
